I just had a minute to kill, so I looked at the film cameras. Hell they are free. i was tempted to get one, for fun, but then I got cold feet. What would I do with these things? I would have to buy films, send out for developping....well to much hassle for a free camera. So I chickened out and now my decision to go digital back to year 2005 was the right one. I could sell all my film gears for really good prices: including F70, F100, F5..... Well , it was 7 years ago.

I got mine to work under Windows 7, it required some trickery but it can be done.

I picked up a Canon Rebel 2000 online for $20 recently. And I found a lot of old undeveloped film at my mother's house. You're right, it's expensive to get developed. But I also have negatives that are over 30 years old, and still can be used, obviously, for reprints, enlargements, and scanned to digital.

At some time, I will start developing my own B & W film. Always wanted to do that. I love film, as it was top dog for what, 100+ years?

It isn't USB. Its is SCSI. Can't even hook it up to my laptop. My old machines are dead. That was a very good scanner though. It's a Nikon LS 2000. I have a bunch of stuff on film. I keep thinking I shoud fix the old dinosaur so I can sacn the slides and negatives. I have a few 4x5s that need scanning as well, but I would have to send that out. Or, just walk away. . . It is only worth something to me.

I still shoot 6x9 and 4x5 black and white. Love the process and the results. Not everything needs to be about speed and convenience ( like McDonalds ). Sometimes just the joy of photography takes over and some of us get that joy from using older film cameras and developing our own film. However, I sold off my old darkroom and digitize all my film for printing at home.

Cool! Maybe I will repair one of my old machines, and get that scanner going again.

I have developing stuff in my attic for 35mm and 4x5. I should ebay that stuff. It is hard to just let go of something that represents and era. Oh well, I let my Ex go and lived through that!!

I just recently started shooting a Speed Graphic 4x5. I bought one on Ebay for a couple hundred bucks. My Grandfather used to shoot table shots at Newport Kentucky casinos in the 1950's with one, so it's nostalgic for me on a couple levels. It's a lot more work than the 1DS2 I normally shoot, but I have to admit it was pretty fun and challenging.

I kept shooting 4x5 all along, and in the past year have begun using a 1937 Voigtlander Bessa 6x9, and this week bought a 1931 Rolleiflex 4x4 and a 1951 Rolleiflex 6x6. Also have & use a 1914 Kodak Special 6x9. I'll probabaly eventually buy a 1930s Leica, and maybe an earlier 1950 Hasselblad. I have a lot of fun with this stuff! Using cameras and lenses made before WW2 (and WW1 even) really taught me exposure. I send the negs out for processing, and scan with an Epson v700. Lately, I've been toying with the idea of buying an 1860s vintage camera and trying wet plate. My oldest lens is a Voigtlander Petzval, made in 1847.

You guys are hard core!

Honestly as I've gotten more into photography the more I am unhappy with the current quality of the status quo. I guess what I really want is the massive detail recorded by a 4X5, I'm just not sure I am willing to pay the price to do it.

Honestly, if you are going to dabble in film, go for a medium format at least (preferably 6x6 and up)

I'm 95% B&W film, I use three Leica M bodies and I have about twelve Leica lenses. I also use a Fotoman 617 panoramic camera. If you want to see what a real panoramic is capable of, take a look at the book Chaos by Josef Koudelka. Incredible!

I only bought my first MF camera last year, a Rolleiflex MX TLR to try out. I liked it so much I then bought an E3 and sold the MX, something I now regret. I got the E3 CLA'd by Essex Camera and it's like new and just wonderful to use. I love composing in the VF and the square format, and the Zeiss and Schneider lenses are to die for.

MX on the left and E3 on the right below.

Kent, I wish you were nearby so I can see some of your machinery. i am thinking of converting one of my rooms to a camera obscura and making a wet plate 6x6ft.
just wondering where do you get and then where to send to for processing the 4x5 and 6x9....

I absolutely enjoy shooting film still, presently it's only 35mm, but I'd love to go back to medium format when I can.

Digital is obviously convenient, but I find it so soulless that I just have to at least have one film camera on hand.

I send my negs out to be processed, and then scan with an Epson v700. If I want to make a big print or something special, I'll spring for a drum scan. I have a hybrid work flow. All in all, I'd say 4x5 is my cheapest system. True, it's about $8 per shot, However, the gear itself isn't that much and I usually only shoot a couple of frames per outing. My most expensive system is my Nikon DSLR with f2.8 zooms etc.
