I shoot both landscapes and wildlife.
Now a question for those who HAVE these two cameras and actually use them for a while,
if you are to pick one of these two and you care for Image quality,which one would you choose?

I've had a D700 since June '09 and a D7000 since early January '11. If I had to choose just one based on IQ alone, it'd be the D700.

The difference isn't that remarkable IMHO. It takes a close look to really see a difference, but it's there. For me it shows up in low light shots where the D700 seems better at lower ISO settings, and high ISO shots with the D7000 show High ISO NR 'smearing'. There's also the increased DoF you get with DX if that matters to you.

If you're into DxO Mark and things like that, the D5100 sensor is also rated '80', just like the D700 and D7k. It's essentially the same sensor as a D7k in a more stripped-down body with an articulating LCD screen and no screw drive for non-AF-S lenses. I just picked one up this week since Nikon dropped the price by $200 until the end of this month. This morning it went off to LifePixel for IR conversion. I may go pick up another one tomorrow, sell my D7k, and then sit tight until the D300s' replacement comes along.

I've used a D700 and currently own a D5200 (same sensor as D7000.) I'd go for the D7000. It's a lot newer technology, the extra res really helps when you crop, the 1.5x is great for wildlife, and with landscapes you pick up one more stop of DoF per f-stop vs. the D700. At ISO 1600 the D700 will begin to pull away, but personally I never shoot landscapes at anything over ISO 400 anyway.

you know, i have both and if i had to give one up i really don't know which one would it be, i guess the d700 its a litttle better in low light but that don't matter to you.
since you are shooting wildlife maybe the d7k would be better for the zoom factor.
maybe rent both for the weekend and try em both, the d700 its heavy but some people like it like that, plus its better weather seal than the d7k.

I have both and if I had to give up one without a doubt I'd keep the D700. People can recite all sorts of rubbish but without a doubt the D700 is one hell of a camera. I won't recite any internet crap, the D700 just flat shoots.
I've shot everything from MotoGP, Spring Boat races, events, Bands in badly lit little clubs, figure skating and today a wonderful wedding. There's no guile to it, you just tell it what you want to do and it does it. BTW I only shoot raw and manual everything.

Hey Bob,

You have both right? So which would you give up?

My experience:

The D7000 has a bit more DR.

The D700 is more noise free, especially when shooting at night. It can shoot cleaner high ISO.

I only had a D7000 for a short while, but I really didn't like the meter because it would put too much weight on the selected focus point, almost like a spot meter. Other than that, it was very good for most uses.

On the other hand, I have to agree with Stdon about how the D700 just shoots. I don't think it has ever let me down, except that lately I find myself wanting some more megapixels to play with.

Jim, I don't have D700, but thinking of getting one. Now I can get one for $15--1800.00. Never touched the D700, but since I adore my D3, FF I think I may like D700, FF, better than D7000, although I have no specific complaint about it. I got great pictures from it.
Good to see that the voters seem evenly divided between these two.
But for now I am trying to get a D800/e....it is still playing hard to get.

I upgraded from a D7000 (which I had for a year) to a D700 recently.. I'd choose the D700.

Take a shot of a city skyline and enlarge to look at the detail, try it at dusk this is where you will see the difference...I like my D7000 but sorry I pick the D700 every time.

I upgraded from a 5dmk2 21.1 mp to D700 and I keep asking myself what took me so long. Yes I call it an upgrade. I honestly don't have any issues with less MP, in many respects i like it better and am often surprised how clean every thing is. . I shoot fine art and commercial / Fashion part time. And print BIG with no issues.

image is just the tip of the iceberg. think about ergonomics. button placement, menu, etc..

Opening this thread, I kind of expecting to hear what you three just said. Having D3 since the very beginning and keeping it, I thought D700, also FF, I thought the IQ should be up there. But having never shot with D700, of course without hand-0n experience, I myself shouldn't have any judgement about it.
Let's see if there is a defense of D7000 out there.

Having used both side by side. I would pick the D700 unless you need video.

IQ wise to me they were close. Even the noise at higher iso was manageable once files were brought to similar size.
The D7000 has video and dual cards. Slightly better DR, but the D700 was never a slouch in that department.

The D7000 AF is not as good as the D300/D700 and variants. It works and is fast, but the D700 is just better

Wise words. I've got about 200k on the d700's I use and bought a d7000 in the spring to replace an aging d300. It has much better IQ than the d300 but I just don't find it can compare to the larger sensor of the d700.

D700 is the Wuenderkamera! It really is a seminal, ground breaking camera that is still soooo functional for today! You will never regret the purchase of a D700!

after 70k clicks on my D7000 and over 250k pictures taken with the D700 I only grab the D7000 if
- the crop-factor is needed for sports (I don't own a really long lens of suitable quality)
- I have to shoot a classical concert (the D7000 is much quieter)

I had both up to about a month ago and like some have stated the dynamic range of the D7K is better but that is about it for me. I chose the D700 due to ergonomics, bigger view finder, better AF system, and consistancy with regard to low light situations. They're both are phenomenal cameras and honestly, you can't go wrong with either.

in almost every respect the performance level of the D7K is within a margin of error equal if just a little higher then the D700. low light is where the D700 pulls ahead due to the larger sensor area and lower pixel count for heat dissapation. for that situation and for some greater challenges i have another option.

+1 if I had to choose the 7K would be the one to go, fortunately I don't have to let either go.
