Going out with my 70-200 II and to be able to throw in this 40 in the bag, pocket and knowing it is a pretty sharp lens, makes for a great option.
Funny you guys mention that combo- I went out this afternoon on a long walk with my daughter and my 70-200 II in a Think Tank digital holster over my shoulder, and the 40 2.8 in the little zipper pocket on the side of it- worked great for the wider shots I wanted, and still enabled me to travel light and easy.
Before the 40 2.8, such focal range would have either required me to carry two bigger and heavier lenses, or take the slower but usable 35-350L with me. The 40mm 2.8 gives me so many more options for being out and about and still having great IQ in a lightweight package over my shoulder.
Goodness I am very very tempted to get this new lens.
It represents a direction that I wish Canon would continue with. Affordable, interesting and sharp. Now, where's a nice new Canon 50mm built to the same standards as this 40mm? I live in hope.
I just received my 40mm yesterday and had time this evening for a quick test drive. Wow! Very happy! Sharp, lovely colours with great contrast. Obviously it's size is an asset for unobtrusive walk-abouts. Full retail in Canada was $229 plus taxes so it felt like a no-brainer decision. If you can find one used (I think I saw one on the b & s for $175 USD) do not hesitate. All shot wide open on a 5d2 except for the Viking, which was stopped down to f/7.1.

Sometimes you don't want the extra bulk. I have been using to on my 5DII and 7D, and it makes for a nice compact SLR and it focusses fairly close as well.
These were taken with the 7D at ISO 640 and the 40mm.
Wow Gila Monster! I once saw a dead one on the side of the street but never one that was alive. Are you somewhere in the desert of Cali? Aren't they extremely poisonous?

No. Death from a Gila monster bite is extremely rare. This is because it's not an aggressive animal and its poisen is relatively weak.
Just ordered one from B&H. After reading a good portion of this thread, I checked the B&H site and saw that it was on sale for $149 shipped. I am thinking that it'll make a compact package with one of my 5d MII's that will be more conducive to taking a camera where I would likely not carry one along otherwise.
