Shot a soccer game last weekend and either lost or someone lifted my 580ex II flash (thought it secure in my F2s velcroed pocket)...sucks. I was going to build a multi-flash setup around the 580 but now, since I've not bought any slaves yet, do I move to the new 600EX and build from there or get a new/used 580? Any thoughts or if anyone has transitioned from the 580 to a 600 setup please chime in...I'm just bummed, am doing my homework, reading up on the 600! Thanks for your help...Jerry.

If you want to build a multiple flash setup then the 600RT is the way to go. The radio transmission is more reliable and not limited to obstruction, etc. The only problem is the price..... . What else is new? You have to fork out more $$ than for the old system. With that said with a lot of folks moving up to the 600RT, there are a lot of 580EX II units available at a good price now than before.

Sorry to hear about the loss. While more expensive the radio control of the 600EX makes in a better long term investment for replacing it. Flashes, like lenses, last a long time if cared for so the extra $200 you might spend will likely work out to less than $10 per year.

I use a pair of 580ex flashes optically (without radio triggers) but that requires working within the specified range (50ft indoors - 30 ft. outdoors), not blocking the slave sensor (small gray window in front on base), and line of sight concerns outdoors. Line of sight is less of a problem indoors isn't necessary do to light bouncing; the slave just needs to see sufficient intensity.

Most don't find the optical system to their liking and add third party TTL triggers. So when you consider their cost the 600EX isn't any more expensive. Last time I checked B&H was offering a $30 discount on the 600EX

If you have a 5D3 or are planning to buy one the 600EX is the only Speedlite with 100% AF assist compatibility with the 61 PT array. So another excuse to upgrade.

Another vote for the 600EX. Having menus you can actual understand is almost worth the upgrade.

Sorry to hear that it has been stolen ( happened once to me with a 1Ds- was never found...) Anyway, I do not want to hijack this threat, but I am nearly in the same boat and need some info about the 600Ex. First of all I hate on camera flash and try to avoid it as much as possible. But sometimes it comes in handy as a fill light. I do a lot of fast bursts (sometimes 100 accu in one burst usually in Hi servo on a 1D mark 4)So the question is when shooting a 24-70 2.8 ( my most used lens) and I am because of light underexposed about 3 stops, can the Ex600 fill the light in, without missing to flash or overheat. That preferable in auto mode? The Ex 580 can't, I have tried 3 times and never used the flash again! Usually the flash would have to work for about 5 min and has to fire around 500 to 600 times Distance to object will be no more than 10 meter.
Thanks for your advice!

I love my 600's. I don't have to think twice about whether or not they will trigger. They just do.

There's also the extended 200mm zoom on the flash head...if you shoot at far distances, this is a great added feature! The 600EX is on my soon-to-buy list principally for that alone.

Love my 600EX-RT units! Upgraded from 580EXII and would never go back. The 600's work so good. However, if you want to go the Pocket Wizard rout, I would skip the 580EXII and go with the refurbished 430EXII units. They work much better with Pocket Wizard then the 580EXII ever did.

The 580EXII has GN190 with 105mm coverage; the 600EX has GN197 with 200mm coverage and GN190 with 105mm coverage. Let's look into what this truly means...

200mm lens mounted on FF camera,
with 580EX and f/4 on lens, flash reaches to 47.5'
with 600EX and f/4 on lens, flash reaches to 49.5'

105mm lens mounted on FF camera,
with 580EX and f/4 on lens, flash reaches to 47.5'
with 600EX and f/4 on lens, flash reaches to 47.5'

<stiffling yawn>

If you don't have need for radio remote, there is not much reason for the 600EX based solely upon flash power.

I have used the 550's for many years in all types of situations all over the world from my work in visual anthropology, natural history and scientific photography. Like mentioned above, like lenses, unless it is a bad lens, there is a long life to be had so an investment over the years isn't bad at all. Get what you really want.

Flashes tend to be less reliable lately than most photo gear and compatibility is constantly changing. Some of models

That isn't good to hear. So flashes are going down in QC or quality in general?

I think 600EX-RT is a clear winner, but I'll probably wait until I can upgrade my camera body, as well.
I've put together a list of all the differences I found between the two models: Canon Speedlte 600EX-RT vs 580EX II
hope, it helps a bit

How is that 61 PT array is working? I am getting my 600 flash tomorrow...

If you decide to go with the 580, I've got 3 to sell after buying a 600 and trying it out. The 580 is better at Optical triggering, but who cares if you have radio.
