p.1 #1 · Need opinions about Canon FD 55 1.2 S.S.C. Aspherical

Hi,

I have an offer to buy a Canon FD 55 1.2 S.S.C. Ashperical converted to EF mount (Won't clear 5D mirror). I already have a Rokkor 58 1.2 Converted to EF, and the Rokkor is amazing on my 50D.

The price seems to be decent. Need to decide by end of today to accept the offer.

Any opinions on how better the Canon lens is?

Thanks,
LS

I have the Canon FD 55 1.2 S.S.C. Ashperical. It's one of the best std lens Canon ever produced. Thanks to floating element design, it's sharp at MFD, even wide open. I also got a Rokkor 58/1.2 last week, but still waiting for the Leitax mount conversion.

I can tell you that I miss the one I had. Was great to use on my T90, especially on B&W film. Also, even though it was big and heavy, the 1.2 opening in conjunction with the T90 focusing screen, made it very easy to focus. One of the all-time great lenses!

There is a long thread about this lens on a German forum with many sample pictures but no direct comparison to the Rokkor. Google translate may help:

However, for this lens the quality and method of conversion could make quite a difference - if you can't try before you buy I would ask for more information on the conversion.

I love mine. it's not particularly "soft" wide open, but tack sharp when stopped down to 1.4.

got mine for $499 from a listing error on eBay. i have the EdMika adapter on it too, which I highly recommend.

Thanks guys. I went ahead and bought it. Shipped it to a friend, will pick it up next time I visit US.

Got mine for $525 for ef mount converted.

Phuang, nice pics. I will be interested to see if you can compare your lens against the rokkor.

Cheers,
Ls

Great price! I also got Eds adapter. It's easily one of my favorite lenses.

Congrats! This FD is a fine lens. BTW, I am still waiting for Leitax kit to arrive. The Rokkor dose not have floating element design (no aspherical element ?), so I guess it won't match the MFD performance of FD. We will see.

The condition of your lens doesn't look very good, not strange at all.

This is (as far as I'm aware of) one of the great classics. It's still one of the very best fast 50-ish lenses ever produced, much better at many things than the new 50L. It's sharper, both wide open and stopped down.

Like the Pentax-A 85/1.4 it's very hard to find something made today with the same optical quality - which is really astounding considering how far we've come with software simulation iterations and new glass types.

Is there much IQ difference between these old Canon 55 1.2 lenses? Is the S.S.C Aspherical any different than, say the "chrome nose" version of the 55/1.2 ?

Funny you should mention that lens: I think the Pentax A* 85/1.4 is the finest lens I ever used. I currently own about 20 or so nice lenses. My sentimental (to be trusted or not) favorite is this allusive, "quiet Beatle" rock star that Pentax delivered to so few...

*** Sadly I have not owned this lens in quite some time...

The SSC Aspherical will have better coatings, and should be better corrected.
