" I'd rather have an 800mm than a 500 if I could...I surely would"
We were on the lookout for condors but only saw Turkey and Black Vultures...or so I thought. Luckily I didn't hit delete on this one as I did on many others (I wonder how many condor shots I may have deleted )
And then I saw the wing band...or at least I thought I did considering this was a speck of a bird taken with 500mm + tc. At 200% I can see this is a condor but not enough definition to read the tag.
This was taken on one of our hikes in Big Sur around Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.
No awards for this one but any time you get a shot of a bird that was virtually extinct in the wild it has to make you
Eric

Good eyes Eric. No wonder they call you.......eyelaser!

On a rafting trip thru the Grand Canyon last fall we saw condors on a few occasions but they were so far away and at cliff top that images I took were only useful if you could use your imagination. I only had a 28-300. The binocs we had confirmed the ID. You are correct about how cool it is to see a bird that was extinct in the wild recovering....in the wild!

I agree, Eric- getting a pic of these giants is a good accomplishment.
I lived in SW Utah for eight years, and many times I took my old Isuzu Trooper II 4x4 into the Arizona Strip (plateau country just to the north of Grand Canyon). On one day-excursion, I met a fellow with a tracking apparatus. He told me there had been a recent release of a few California condors nearby, and he was monitoring their movements. I saw one, but it was too far away for my 400mm (way too far), so I got no pics. Still, the whole idea of our trying to save the species is encouraging.

I'd be thrilled to see one. Getting any sort of pic is a big bonus.

Thanks guys...nothing like getting excited about a sighting 48 hours AFTER the fact...now where are those photos of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker and Big Foot I must have somewhere on one of my hard drives

What you needed is to club a seal and wait... they appear in droves on the beach when one washes up there in Big Sur from what I hear.

Still a nice grab shot of an extremely rare bird man
