p.1 #1 · Canon 18-135 vs 18-200 for walk=around lens??

Good morning and Happy Father's day to everyone on FM.

I've tried searching, but haven't found a lot on this specific topic. Please refer me to other threads if appropriate.

I'm looking for a general walk-around lens for my 7D, mostly for general vacation shooting and such.
I don't yet have a lens with IS, so part of my question is which of these lenses (or similar non-canon lenses), has a better IS system.

What I have read is that both of these lenses degrade in IQ as you get to the long end of their focal range.

I'm not locked into getting a Canon lens, so other suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance...
Bob

p.1 #2 · Canon 18-135 vs 18-200 for walk=around lens??

I looked at photozone.de and bought the 18 to 135. I've been really happy with mine. I would expect the long and to be worse! but actually ran into a soft spot at the wide end. It seems flimsy but mine worked fine for months of daily use until I dropped it. I sold 16 by 20 portrait with this lens. A f tends to be off at wide end. If you want tip top image quality don't get a super zoom. But I like this lens. close focus is to about a foot and a half it all focal lengths! I use mine even though it's broken and has something rattling around inside

Thanks msd..., but I'm looking for more reach than 55, and considerably less $ than $1000.

p.1 #5 · Canon 18-135 vs 18-200 for walk=around lens??

Every lens has compromises but I'd shy away from both the 18-135 and 18-200: build quality, AF speed and IQ took a few too many hits for me and will not compliment the excellent performance and rez of the 7D. The EF-s 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS USM is a wee bit shorter than 135 but offers up a lot more in terms of IQ, build and AF speed. The 4-stop IS is amazing and it is actually a little sharper and a lot less prone to flare than my 17-55 2.8. Pair it with the 55-250 USM (or 70-200 4L) and you'll have a great travel duo. My review of the 15-85.

I bought the tamron 18-270 VC lens for my fiancÚ and have used it a coupe of times myself. I think for what it is, it's a viable option to the other two lenses you asked about. She used it extensively on photo trips to glacier national park and up to Churchill for polar bears and produced very pleasing photos.

I believe it has 4 stop I s. Got photos at long end at 1/8 that were sharp at 100 percent. Got maybe 5 or 6 out of 30 or 40 good performance.

Get a return the first 1 wasn't sharp wide open. Bought excellent plus at keh.

I have used both and I would prefer 18-135 over 18-200 because the smaller one is sharper. On the other hand I am amazed at the IQ of the latest plasticky 18-55 that ships with T3i. Sure it is slower, but it is just as sharp as the other more expensive lenses made for EF-S mount.

I had the 18-135 with my 60D kit and loved it all the way until I sold it on Ebay when I upgraded to the 24-105 L. Good lens, very little barrel distortion (in my copy at least) and pretty light as well. I consistently got at least 3 stops worth of IS.

I'm far from being a hyperzoom fan (my everyday lens is the 17-55/2.8 IS) but if you insist, the new 18-135 STM has better MTF than its predecessor. I'd wait a bit until it is in the stores.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

A major reason i got the 18 - 135 was that it was sharper than the other super zooms in the photozone.de tests. You might not do better than this in a super zoom. You might also consider the excellent 55 - 250 if you have 18 - 55 covered.

Yep. I remember having the 18-55 IS and 55-250 IS. Very good IQ.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Yeah i kinda kept carrying around the 55-250 with the 18-135. Probably shouldn't have done that but two better than one!

I had the 18-135 and used it with my 7D for a while and it was a pretty good lens for the money, my copy was nice and sharp and it made a great walkabout lens on the 7D.

The only things I didn't really like about it was the slower then USM AF and my copy started getting zoom creep not long after I started using it. Looks like Canon have fixed those two issues with the new STM version which now gets improved autofocus speed and they have also put a zoom lock on the new lens.

I would go for the 18-135. Pretty good picture quality for what it is and its price. Works well as walk-around lens. For me, not quite wide enough but the 18-200 does not address that problem while being way more expensive.
