p.1 #1 · Fixed! My journey into the unknown. Or, how I fixed my 1dsMkII.

It finally happened. The apocalypse occurred on a shoot. My trusty steed, the 1dsMkII I so cherish, took a fall. Placed it along with the 24-70 on a desk while adjusting umbrellas. Turned around just in time to see an assistant grab a bag from next to the desk. The handle of the bag caught the neckstrap of the camera, in turn pulling the beast to the ground, 3 feet to an unpadded piece of crap carpet on concrete.

I experienced tunnel vision. Then dread. Then sickness. I didn't even want to walk over there to pick it up. I don't remember if anyone said anything.

I saw the filter bent like a bike rim that got run over laying in front of the lens. Little bits of glass. Nooooo!

Picked up my wounded child and started to assess the damage. Well, I won't be mounting any filters on the front of the 24-70 for quite some time, it now has a nice egg shape to it, but no broken glass. Its a bit stiffer than usual zooming, but I'll take that as a plus.

As far as the body, well there was a noticeable rattle now. Arrrgh.

Push the shutter button, whir click! Yay! Sounds the same. Look through the viewfinder... It was dreadful. Like an LSD induced vision, my viewfinder was now all skewed and out of focus, dreamy almost.

Crap. No money to send it in, kids just started orthodontist work. Time to bust out Mr. Fixit! So I gathered my mini screwdrivers, cleaned a spot on my desk and went to work... Why the he!! are there so many screws holding on the front and back covers Finally got the back cover off, just to get the front cover off, so I could get to one screw holding the top plate on. Did you know there is an amazing amount of room in that camera?

Finally get to the diopter adjustment which was broken. Tore it all apart to find out the impact knocked the middle lens (moving lens) out of its cradle. A little drop of 5 minute epoxy on the outer edge and its not going anywhere again for a long time! It was harder putting it together than taking it apart, trying to remember which screw went into which hole, proud to say I had no 'left-overs'! The last issue was re-gluing the rubber grips back on the body, 3M super77 works real well for that!

Moment of truth, mount the lens and fire away! It works! it works! Seems to be back to its old glory again!! So money saved, and a bit more faith in how durable these 1 series cameras are.

Thanks for reading my long post, but I had to share my little victory with someone who understands...

Awesome! You should have taken pictures of the individual steps or at least when the camera was taken apart for us to see . Well, the main thing is, you camera is up and running, er... shooting again .

Wait....You have an all-text description, on a photo forum, of taking apart and repairing a camera....and no pictures!?!?

Yes, with said camera in disrepair I had no real options for taking pics! My cell phone camera isn't a camera, and my backup was outta battery charge. I didn't want to lose what courage I had to stop and think about my actions...

I hate, hate to be a downer, but do test your 24-70. A fall that dents the filter ring can also knock the front element into decentered positions.

The good news is fixing that is a chip shot compared to what you've already done with the camera.
