p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · CF card speed test

After reading RG new test of memory cards, I did one myself for fun. I got a few new and large cards a couple of days ago.
Using my 1D4 and pressing the shutter button for 30 seconds with each card. Raw files and the same shutterspeed, aperture, lens and so on for each card. I also tried it a few times. Here is the result with my larger cards. It's how many pics I could take in those 30 seconds with each card.

Transcend 64GB UDMA 7 600x ---------111 shots
SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro ---------104 shots
Lexar 128GB UDMA 7 400x ----------96 shots
Transcend 64GB 400x ----------71 shots
Duracell 32GB 600x ----------67 shots
SanDisk 32GB Extreme III ----------63 shots
A-Data 32GB 533x -----------50 shots
Transcend 32GB 133x -----------44 shots

I'm surprised the Duracell card was so fast in the RG test. And it was better than most Sandisk and Transcend cards with every camera. It was far behind those cards in my test.

Here's a quick price survey for the top four performers.

List prices at B&H, US dollars, per card.

$185 Transcend 64GB UDMA 7 600x ---------111 shots
$150 SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro ---------104 shots
$377 Lexar 128GB UDMA 7 400x ----------96 shots
$135 Transcend 64GB 400x ----------71 shots

List prices at B&H, US dollars, per 128GB (1x 128GB, 2x 64GB, 4x 32GB)

$370 Transcend 64GB UDMA 7 600x ---------111 shots
$600 SanDisk 32GB Extreme Pro ---------104 shots
$377 Lexar 128GB UDMA 7 400x ----------96 shots
$270 Transcend 64GB 400x ----------71 shots

Prices in Canada are crazy expensive. For example, the Lexar 128GB 400x is $700 at Henry's. I buy my large cards in the US.

But I got higher numbers for about all others. Because I was shooting only raw. He was shooting raw+jpg. The Duracell was the best cards in his test (with the cards I also tested) Better than Lexar 400x and Sandisk Extreme Pro

I might pick up that Transcend 64GB card you tested. Have you had any issues with there cards in the past? Seems to have mixed reviews on Amazon. But the test you did and the value is hard to beat.

Amazon

I bought five Transcend 64GB 400x cards 2010. They have worked perfect in 3 different cameras all the time. I also own more than 50 other Transcend cards that have worked perfect without any issues.

One other little variable you might want to throw in if you ever do testing again..
Try it when the cards are 75% full and the cards are scrambling for unwritten space if you don't do that already. That's what really separates cards.

Thank you but it's too much work, and too difficult These cards are big and hold a lot of pics/files. Only one 128GB card alone holds nearly 6000 files from my 1D4.
My experience is that the card that is fastest here will also be the fastest card when 75% full. And the slowest will still be the slowest card. You will notice the difference even more between a fast and slow card when they are close to getting full. Not at 75% but more like 90-95% full.
I will probably do another test when I get the new Canon 1D X body.

I just received a pair of Transcend 64GB 600x cards from B&H. I was a bit disappointed by my 1DIV buffer performance yesterday while shooting swallows. Today I found out that I was using the SD card.

I'll try again later...

My experince with that card is that it's very fast. As you can see in my test. The newer 64GB card is a UDMA 7 card. And it's faster than the other Transcend 600x. They are older UDMA 6 cards.

Yes. That's what I expect. I'm currently using Transcend 400x cards with my 1DIV, at least until Friday I was... That's when the 600x cards arrived.

I can't buy every brand and every speed But if I bought more Lexar cards I would not buy the Lexar 600x. Not after they have released their new UDMA 7 cards in 400x and 1000x speed.
