p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Floating Bladderwort

Funny how a carnivorous plant with an unappealing name can be so beautiful, especially up close. I ran across this on a swampy trail in Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park in Florida. I'm pretty sure this is Utricularia radiata although somebody who knows better can surely correct me.

I'd be interested in comments on which of these you like best...

1. The scientific view -- four image focus stack

2. and 3. closer, at f/4

4. A different individual, with changed lighting and background

5. Five-image focus stack

Comments and suggestions are always welcome and appreciated.

Lovely set!! The focus stacks seem to have worked well - no noticeable artifacts. Thanks you for taking the time to put these images together.

A nice set Dave. 4 works best for me. The flower showing larger in the frame with a blurred bg puts more emphasis on the flower ~ Ron

Wonderful work David, I prefer the focus stacked images (1 and 5). This is a complex plant that really needs all the details to be appreciated. #5 is my favourite and I hope you print it big!

Thanks, Ken, Ron, Jonathan and Rob. Rob, you make a good point. I wanted to shoot both a descriptive shot of the whole plant and "artsy" details, so I did both, but it hadn't been my goal to make the focus stack the wall-hanger. But in many ways that one is more interesting and unique than the close-up, which could be any pretty flower. I hadn't thought of it that way; thanks.

The BG of #3 works best for me for the close ups.
The last one is very cool with all the details.
Well done, David.
