Thanks Per and Eric.
This little slice of life took place in the middle of the Mammoth Hot Springs "upper springs loop," a 1-mile loop road. Mamma and her babe were food-scrounging in their normal bear manner. I and about 50 others had seen them, parked on the side of the road, and were standing, spread out along the road watching. Also there was a ranger.
Mamma was familiar with the presence of people and was basically ignoring us. The ranger made sure no one left the road and walked toward the bears- or did anything else stupid. So it was a peaceful few minutes until the momma led her cub away and into the forest.
Note: if this had been a grizzly with cub, the ranger would have been increased the distance between the people and the bears by a considerable amount, and probably told us to stay in our cars. It's not that grizzlies go around chasing people, it's just that everything about them is more formidable than with black bears.
