p.1 #1 · Jasper Elk

These images were taken a few weeks ago while I was driving through Jasper National Park, just a few minutes down the road from where I got my images of big horn sheep and mountain goats which were posted earlier.

1. When I grow up, I wanna be a duck - This younger elk spent quite a bit of time in the lake. No idea why. His diminutive horns seemed a bit odd. Not symmetrical.

2. The more mature individual of the pair is still small relative to some in the area.

3. The young one seems to know his place (behind the larger bull)

I would appreciate your comments on the images. Don't hold back!

Ken

Hey Ken, how did you get that wet mop on the first elk? My favorite is the last with those beautiful mountains in the background.

I like 1 and 3 as is Ken. 2 could have used a little fill flash, but is nice otherwise ~ Ron

Yes, these guys were pretty ragged looking. Thanks for commenting Eric.

Thanks for the comments Ron. I was trying for the backlit effect on the antlers. That part worked ok, but I couldn't get the animal dark enough for it to be dramatic. The time of day foiled me a bit.

Nice captures Ken - these shots make me want to spend everyday during spring and summer outdoors, chasing flowers, critters and landscapes with the camera. (Have to make time for a bit of fly fishing too of course!)
cheers, Steve

Nice work Ken! The last shot rocks with the set 2 is a bit too backlit for me

I'm looking forward to heading to Jasper in a few months, it will be a first for me

Ken- my "unheld back" comments . Meant in the friendliest of spirits :
I love these!
While I was enjoying them, I thought of a couple of things that might make the presentation a little better (that's one way I try to learn from others' work).
To me, they all would benefit from some discreet brightness/contrast fiddling, plus some sharpening.
So I fiddled with the last image (which I like best).
Here's what I got:
Then I thought I'd crop it into more of a "wildlife shot." So I then did that.
If you want me to pull them, please say so- no problem.
Charlie

Thank you Steve. I also wish I was fiscally free to pursue my hobbies full time.
