p.1 #1 · Headlamp

I have a cheapo Energizer headlamp, don't know the model #. It has 3 different modes: regular white light, energy save mode and night mode. It's great except that I have to toggle through all the modes to turn it off. The last time I used it I had to go from night mode in the darkness to the 2 other modes before I can turn it off. Is there a headlamp out there where I don't have to toggle through all the modes to turn it off? Especially while in night mode. Thanks guys!

Any of the Petzl's should do what you want: http://www.petzl.com/us/outdoor/headlamps/allheadlamps
With the ones I have you switch between modes and turn on/off separately.

I have both a Petzl and a Princeton Tech headlamp that I like very much, although I think the Petzl definitely has the features that you are looking for.

I can vouch for the Petzl stuff. I've had a lot of gear from them for my outdoors sporting goods. Great stuff!

THe BEST headlamp (and not cheap). Lupine Piko X. But I'm thinking you probably don't want 750 lumens either.

actually the Betty 6x6 is just a hair more powerful and has headlight adaptability. just a mere 2600 lumens and just ia bit over $1000. probable singe the you head using it.

the best is relative.

i'm trying out a BD Icon v2012 at $62 and 200Lu using 4 AA batts (easily procured around the world)

I actually have a wilma (1500 lumens) that I use on my bike for night riding with the Piko for the helmet (total of 2200 lumens). I agree with you, but the Betty and the Wilma are just slightly too large for helmet use compared to the diminutive Piko.

I ride a lot at night on rural roads at speeds up to 30mph. The roads have cracks and holes it's nice to see and there is no substitute for having a car think you are bigger than you are. I pair those with a Dinotte 300R (300 lumen) flashing red tail light. Let me put it this way - I get serious respect on the road at night to the point were I often laugh out loud.

Side benefits are that grilling at night with a Lupine headlight is nothing short of awesome. Or being able to mow the grass at night with no problems.

Petzl's were recently on closeout at REI. I forget the exact model designation but it was one of their upper midrange stuff at nearly 50% off.

Zebralight.

Less than a hundred bucks for 750 lumens, if you want high output.

just got the new black diamond icon 2012. 200L at high. more then enough to do a good eye burn. red leds for light sight. close up white leds. and more optional levels to work with on all lamps. all on 4 AA batts rather then propriatary mondo ones. oh ipx7 water resistance. picked it up for $62 shipped.

you don't need a car highbeam to work your gear or walk out of the woods at dusk or even night.

Once your eyes are night adapted, you need very little light. But what fun is that?
