p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Rhododendrons, Redwoods and Oregon coast

Following the tradition of the great trip reports posted here by our members, I wanted to share this one with you guys.
As you might know I visited Northern California coast a few months ago and promised myself I would be back to try
to capture the beautiful Redwood forrest in the Rhododendron bloom season.
You can read about my November trip here:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1072616/

I tried to include more Oregon coast this time too. A few quick thoughts:

- it's extremely hard to photograph Rhododendron flowers with a Redwood tree in a good light.
It's not very common to have such a frame to work with and the light must be perfect to capture
something nice and interesting.

- Oregon is amazing and VERY green right now. I've never seen such a green forest before.

- There is a lot of beautiful wildflowers at the moment with wild lilies possible to find. They are rare in California
and I was lucky to photograph a few kinds including chocolate lilies.

- If you are after the pure and green beauty of Redwood forest, you should go in Winter months.
It's dryer right now, still the Oregon forest was so green

- Don't even think about going in Summer/Fall, it will be hot, dry, not as nice and full of mosquitos (and tourists).

- And one warning - this is a different planet out there. Be prepared, it's… different.

Technical note: I used my NEX-5N and M lenses exclusively.
21 SE, 28 Cron, 50 Lux, 90 AA and 135 Telyt. My most used ones were by far 28 Cron and 50 Lux.

Part 1 of my images, more to follow.

Enjoy, Andrew

From part 2 my favorite is image #12. I also like to compostion of #10, but find it a bit distracting that the background is lighter than the foreground (which was probably unavoidable is this situation).

Boris, this is exactly related to the difficulty of photographing those plants
in a deep forest environment. I went for this trip to photograph Rhododendrons
and I came back with many OTHER images
I still got some, but not what I was hoping for...
As far as the bg being lighter, at least there is a contrasty bg to show my flowers...
Often it's all dark or some flowers are blown up in full sun with complete darkness around.
Image #14 was the best light I ever got to capture those blooms.
But there was no Redwood tree around

But. While I read the ALT forum everyday I post rarely so do hesitate to be critical, if you want to tell me to go forth and procreate go ahead..... So often forum members go to places I will never get to and then take photos that could have been taken practically anywhere, No's 1,2,5,10,11 and 14. Then some way over processed sea/landscapes, no3 and (especially) no9 frankly on my screen are just plain overcooked. Best for me is 4. Sorry to be miserable.

great shots! really like 4, 7, and 8. i agree, this is a very difficult shooting environment. one of the only times i've wished for a ZE 21mm and a FF camera is in these forests. getting the right angle and perspective to show their majesty is pretty much impossible.

i have to say i do think #3 is a fair bit over cooked. i probably wouldn't notice it as much though if i hadn't spent so much time in that exact location myself. seeing cannon beach look vaguely tropical just seems wrong to my mind.

3 8 and 13 are stunning!
I really like the colors in 2, but reckon it would work better if there was a plane of trees in focus, or the one tree was not push so far to the right...

#8 & #12 are my favorites.
I went up there to Northern Cali Redwood country on Sat 27th, and shot all day Sunday and drove back Sunday night very late and tired to the bay area.
I found some nice soft foggy light early Sunday morning but the Rhodies were not yet blooming in the dark old growth Redwood areas yet. Mostly blooming in the sunnier more wide open, warmer areas. I hope to go back up there soon again.
Photographing in redwood forests with harsh sunshine beaming down in spots is no fun.
Wish I could get up to Oregon coast and Olympic NP sometime too.
I really love hiking around in those great forests up there, just soaking in all the greens.
You must have had a great trip being up there for a week.
