Thank you fotojennik, I tried that and found some places i figure i also ask the pros. This community is about helping each other and advicing each other. I figure I asked if anyone recommended a place that they are happy with. It's always the new members that feel the need to post google. If u had no help to offer just move along.

I've used both Moo and nextdayflyers.com most recently. Moo is is pricey and is not to everyone's taste. NDF is inexpensive and does pretty amazing work for the price.
As far as design goes, I dabbled in graphic design for a number of years and so never hired anyone to do my stuff. You need to decide if you want an identity package (logo, letterhead and envelopes in addition to the card), or only a card.
I would shop locally for a designer if you don't feel up to the task, primarily so you can have a face-to face and talk about what your needs are and how they can be met while staying within your budget. Poorly executed business collateral is more of a liability than an asset, so don't rush into this. Given the economy, you may get a pretty sweet deal from a hungry designer.

I had a graphic designer do a logo for me last year, emailed it to my local printer and she came up with three designs, one of which I now use and ran a 1000 cards for like $95. Logo ran me $400 with full rights. Designer is a friend's sister fresh out design school, so we gave her shot and she knocked it out the park.

Hello Skasol, I have used PrintPlace.com for years, have always been please with the quality and speed of service for the price. Here's one sample of the business card that I've got from their tumblr, recently printed from PrintPlace designed by the client: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6e4coMIcu1rxgu1jo1_1280.jpg

Heads up if you want to use Vistaprint for business cards.
They seemed attractive, cheap, lots of styles, can substitute you own images, change content, fonts, etc. The cards were of good quality BUT:
Alas, a month later I started receiving unsolicited magazines charged to my business account. Found out that Vistaprint shares your data (including credit card info) with a host of "partners", some of which seem to be involved in magazine scams. Very well thought out to prevent prosecution; an "agency" in one state places the magazine order with a publisher in another state. When you call the publisher to cancel the subscription, you are told they "cannot cancel an order made by an agent. Contact the agent to have the order canceled". The agent tells you to call the publisher.
Ended up having to cancel my business credit card and have a new number issued.
And contacting Vistaprint was useless - they never responded.

I took my information to a local print shop in town and they worked with me on the format. Did a great job. Printed both sides along with one of my images as background. Total cost for 500 cards including setup was 75.00. Could have doubled the amount of cards for a small add on cost.
In the past I also used Vistaprint. I didn't have the same problems as harrygilbert but after reading his post I would certainly hesitate using them again. There final product was ok. I used there format and it was easy to use and cost effective.

I've tried going to Staples with my own files and the quality wasn't that great.
Printed at home with a kit and could not uniformly cut the cards to desire specs.
Had a local graphic guy do some design and print but the service was sub-par.
Want to try moo cards but kinda of spendie at the moment. Works great for photographer who wants to print 50 different images in a stack.
I have been using vista print .. just find a coupon, do not need to upgrade stock card for $9 because the standard stock is fine. I usually order 250 count max because I always find something to change.
Vista Print prices are from $4.99 specials to $14.99. (the ads sometime expires but call up customer service and see if they can help)
note the delivery time if you want low cost or free delivery.
I use adobe illustrator --> business card template --> save file as default --> upload directly (make sure to always check the layout after upload to ensure correct cropping)
Why I chooses Vista Print? Cheap, decent stock paper, I can order coffee mugs, magnets, and stickers with my design on file and send it to clients if needed.

Run as far from VistaPrint as you can go. I've given them two chances and left angry, a little poorer, and with thousands of ruined cards.
I've been using PSPrint.com for a while. Cards are always on time, and of highest quality. They also do the full gamut of print materials so it's pretty much one stop shopping. Files are saved for easy re-order as well.
Honestly, if you're halfway decent at photoshop, you can whip up business cards pretty easily. I'm by no means a professional, but I've been designing my own cards for a while. I got this printed for my wife's business a few weeks ago, and I think they turned out great.

I prefer graphics cards for this kind of stuff, but for my consulting business I like much more plain cards, I've had my eye on the moo.com Luxe series for a while, but they are a bit expensive for business cards.

I've got my cards coming in from VistaPrint (500 for $20), lets see how good of quality they do. I hated the checkout process though. You MUST go through page after page after page after page of advertisements.

Did you order cards on the premium paper? With the premium paper and shipping/taxes, I was close to $30 for 500. The premium paper is really nice....very heavy and coated on both sides, similar to glossy photopaper.

Well mine just came in. Very disappointed in the quality. I thought the paper I got would be glossy, but it wasn't (apparently I ordered the wrong one? Could of sworn it said glossy). The cards feel like I printed them out on a cheap printer at home and cut them out myself. I even used the template they provided for illustrator and I ended up with a white boarder around my cards. Don't think I'll be using them again. First and last time customer for Vistaprint.

The white border on my card above is from copying and pasting from my email order confirmation. The cards do not have a border. Alignment was perfect as were the colors. The card stock I got is heavy and stiff with a finish that is closer to luster than full gloss. Definitely a quality card. I certainly agree the process of laying out and ordering the cards was not easy. I had tried another vendor first before I realized they would not even deal with RGB colors but needed CYMK.
It is interesting to see how one person's experience can be so much different than anothers.

*Reply as to design only as printing sources covered well*
I had a local graphics designer (youngster) do it. She came up with 6 different designs, none of which I liked - finally she came up with one that was dynamite. $300.00, a CD full of B&W and Color logs of different sizes.
One thing I found, it's important to give your designer some guidance as to what your target market is, and what you like and don't like as far as colors, it also helps to be able to sit down with the designer when you need to.
Make sure at least one of your logo's has the (C) in it. If you plan on registering it, then add the (R).
