Friday morning I found 2 sandhill cranes working their way toward the grebe chicks. Saturday morning it was a GBH. Those birds flew away as I approached. I am amazed that all 4 of the grebe chicks hatched are still alive.
Here are 4 of the photos I shot saturday with my 100-400 lens.
1) The nest (original) is a bit crowded these days.
2) The race and the prize ... mother grebe has learned that if she gives the poor frogs a good shake they will pull in two and the chicks can down their half easier. But then she always has to dive again for the left-overs.
3) Three of the chicks kind of hiding out in the weeds at leisure while mom feeds the fourth a minnow. Note the little white bottomed guy scratching his back.
4) Mr big shot ready to fly to the moon ... in his long johns? I don't think so.
