p.1 #1 · Bald Eagle and Chick (Testing 2x III)

I rented a 2x III and tried it on my 7d/500f4 this weekend with bald eagle nesting.

With the 7d, you need to manually focus it, with live view which is quite challenging because of the vibrations from wind and movement.

I am not yet convinced to buy it but am going to play with it another day.

Here are my best shots.

Comments and feedback is appreciated.

These are all cropped about 2/3.

They seem significantly soft as compared to 1.4x.

#1 looks a bit soft but the others look good. How do they look magnified at full resolution? I use the 2X all the time with my 500. With the 1D III you can still use centre spot autofocus. I think for the money it is worth keeping. I've taken some winning images with mine, usually on a tripod but occasionally hand held. Good luck. Don

DonGut:

I found the focussing too hard with live view to know if I focussed properly since it was so sensitive at 1000mm and the vibration was too much to tune the focus. Maybe I need to buy a 1div to achieve focus but then the magnification is marginal as comparing 7d/1.4 vs 1div/2x.

I will give it another try tomorrow with Osprey with less cropping. Clearly it achieved better than using my tamron 1.4 stacked with my Canon 1.4xii.

I need the 600 F4 III

Not bad for that combo. With the 7D's crop factor plus the 2x TC, I would double that shutter speed, regardless of whether or not you were using a tripod.

Tony: Good suggestion. I was using a heavy carbon fibre tripod with sidekick. I will try it tomorrow if the weather cooperates. Thanks for the suggestion. Scott

3 and 4 turned out pretty good Scott

That's a long ways away and a super steady tripod and fast shutter speeds are really important at these distances and focal length. The other thing is shooting through that much environment > heat waves > Haze > etc etc

Those are pretty tough shooting conditions.

The last two came out pretty darn good IMHO

Nice Scott. Your results are pretty good for manual focusing. I gave up on mf because my success rate was too low ~ Ron

Hi Scott,

The first seems focused on the chick and f8 did not cut it to keep the adult in focus. The others appear sharp at this size. When you get to this focal length everything gets critical and every mistake shows. Are you applying any down force with your left hand on the lens? Many also advise pressing your eye to the finder which is not going to be possible with live view if working quickly.

Looks like you found a reasonably accessible nest. The images are nice, but do seem to suffer a bit from being at the limits of the equipment.

Scott, the 7D will autofocus in live view even at f8. While not as fast as regular AF, it is accurate.

anthony whitmo: Yes maybe too far away. I will have to keep looking. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

surfnron: I think I will give up on manual focussing too. Too hard. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

morris: I was using a remote shutter release in live view but I will try the body dampening next. Good suggestion. Much appreciated. Scott

KCollett: I agree that 1600mm cropped 2/3 is a pretty heavy test. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Mile High: I need to read my manual again. I have never tried focusing in live view. Thanks for the tip. Much appreciated. Scott

Scott,

Nice shots. Regarding manual focus with such high magnification. If you have access to a laptop you can use the EOS Utility software to focus via a USB cable instead of touching the lens. You can zoom in like liveview, to assist in the focusing.

I'd be happy with them too. You did a fine job. 5x on the live view? Works pretty good if the birds aren't too active. My eyes are not good enough for manual focus without the 5x zoom in live view on. Nice work!

All: Sorry for the tardy response - I was out taking pictures.

Dan Heitman: They were in Inveremere on the west road just past town. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Netgarden: I have discovered that manual focus is difficult. I used 10x. Next time I will use liveview auto focus as suggested above. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
