On monday, returning on our Queen's Birthday (Canadian Holiday that starts the summer in Alberta), I found some baby bears.

Here are my best shots - they were really really cute and I hated to leave them to go home.

Comments and feedback is appreciated. Scott

1 of 5

First the mother. She is the healthiest mother I have every seen for this early in the season.

Super cute Scott. I really like #4 with the two babes. Why the very different colour in the two of them?

This is the 2nd set of siblings I saw in the same area with cinnamon and black combined. I will have to do some reading to find out if they are from different or same fathers.

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

[ from the internet:

Bears have delayed implantation. The fertilized egg develops into a small embryo called a blastocyst. After this brief period of development, of the fertilized egg suddenly stops growing and simply floats freely in the uterus for several months. If a sow is in peak condition when she heads into her winter den, the embryo implants in the uterus and begins to develop. If the sow is not in peak condition at the onset of hibernation, her body will reabsorb the embryo.

Male bears will mate with more than one female during breeding season. A female bear, may also mate with a couple of different bears in the same day, making it possible for cubs in a single litter to be fathered by more than one father. ]

Thus it is possible to have two colors just because of gene recessive vs dominant and the probilities of 2 recessive genes matching up or because of different fathers. [I have blue eyes and my father has brown eyes and my mother has blue eyes and brown is dominant - so my dad must have passed only the blue]

Don't ask me to go collect DNA because the mother looks tough.

You got some real nice, and cute, images Scott. That momma bear looks big. I may have needed a good IS lens to control the shaking if I was there.

birdied: Glad you like them. These were all taken with 500 f4 on full frame. I started with my 7d but it was too close. I was about 75' away. I think the Cinnamon was worried by my big lens. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Mark Cronin:The cinnamon is a good looking baby bear.Glad you like him. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Rob Tillyer:Its amazing how good (fat) they look after a very deep snow fall winter. The grass must be very nutritional. Glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
