p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Pied Bill Grebe Nest Hatches ... Now Day 5 | |
I've been wathing this pied billed grebe on her nest for a bit.. The wait is over ... I think she has 5 of these little guys. Unfortunately there are any number of green and GB herons around. good luck kids.

Photo 2 ... Little guy on the left was checking to see how big his mouth is ...
Photo 3 ... Man are these little guys growing. I shot this photo today (Tues)... the first two on Sun, two days ago.
Mom grebe is constantly swimming around underwater and surfacing to bring little black things to the nest ... I can't tell if it is plant or aquatic animal. The little ones will hear her surface or see her coming and will make a bee line off the nest in her direction ... then return to the nest for a bit of stretching and lounging.
The male grebe is in a separate area of the pond and is totally worthless except for making weird noises..
I suspect the female will probably move them soon ... she is near a road and attracting a lot of attention now from bikers and dog walkers who seek out this nature area.
