A short distance from my home is a pool where a pair of rather regal looking mute swans live:
They have built a nest, this year there are seven eggs which they take turns to incubate.
No.2 and No.3:
I've spent a little time watching the nest, half hoping that the eggs might hatch whilst I was there with my camera. No such luck, but as I was watching I saw a coot make a stealthy approach towards the swan's nest.
It soon became clear what the coot's intention was, he was taking a short cut to building his own nest by stealing twigs right out from under the swan and its eggs!
No.5 Taking a twig:
No.6 Making a swift get away:
In just a few minutes I saw the coot make a number of raids on the swans nest, each time coming away with a large twig or piece of reed. The swan seemed to have a big problem figuring out what was going on, sometimes the coot had to pull really hard to retrieve a piece of the nest to steal and the swan would open an eye and half raise its head but didn't actually seem to see the coot and wake up to what was happening. I've no idea how long the coot kept this up for after I left, I half wonder if when I go back I'll find the swans nest half gone! Hopefully not as it will be fun to photograph the cygnets once they hatch.
