Hey, how about that ... this male cardinal landed right in front of me and posed for about 20 seconds. Plenty of time to grab a few shots although a few of them were butt shots. He is done with his spring molting but his mate is looking pretty ragged right now.

Nice shot, they are tough because they are quick to exit. Its hard to be red in the wild. (:>

Nice one, Paul. I would have doubled that shutter speed.

Excellent shot and composition. A little tight framing around the tail area.

You have just enough DOF that the eye is sharp yet the head feathers are not. Most advise to focus on the eye Paul. The exposure is great.

Thanks for your comments everybody ... Tony, I'm not that quick ... no way I could adjust anything (exposure speed) in time that I had but from what your photos always look like, I have no doubt in my mind that you could do it.
Dalite ... you certainly are right about the tail cropping ... that is all there was. I got one other sequence click off and tail feathers are not entirely in in that frame. Other couple of frames he turned around and tucked in his crest ... of course I got all of him in in those 3 frames.
And Morris ... right on, that eye has to be sharp AND it has to have a highlite in it.

It's a fine shot, nicely framed and composed, and the BG is excellent. However, to my eye, there is a tiny bit of camera shake, which i recognize because i see it in so many of my own shots. Given this pose, the entire foot should also be crystal clear, but it's not. This shouldnt result from mirror slap at this shutter speed. Were you shooting on a tripod?

To me, the critical focal point on a bird isn't the eye itself, but rather that "pebbly" ring (the sclerotic ring?) of exposed skin that surrounds the eye. When you get that ring in perfect focus, the eye itself will be in perfect focus, but the eye itself doesn't really offer the precise focal point information to the camera for precise focus that the textured ring does. In this shot, the eye itself appears to be in focus, but the ring is a little soft.

Hey David:
Thanks for checking in:
Yes, No tripod ... Two things ... like you and Tony Markle said, I should have been at a higher shutter speed. And, unfortunately, I don't have a sharp copy of the 100 to 400 Canon lens ... sent it in a long time ago but it didn't do any good. What you see here is just about as sharp as they get with this lens at 400mm.

OH yeah ...with my 75 year old eye, the highlight in a critters eye is going to have to do.
