Awaiting delivery of a D4 this coming week and plan to get one of the 2 lens mentioned above. Would like to get everyone's opinion on whether I should go for the 24 or 35? I'm coming from a 5d mkii and consider my 35L my everyday go to lens, which I love. My guess is that the 10mm in focal length won't be too drastic to adjust to and reading other threads raving about the 24mm put me in this dilemna. On the 5d2, more than often, I crop the shots to get my composition, but now that I'm moving to a D4 and with the drop in resolution, would this be and issue thus making the 35 a better choice? Please note that I will be using this as an everyday lens. Opinions appreciated, and thanks in advance!

I would go 24 since 1.2x gives you 28 and 1.5x 35.

The difference between a 24mm and a 35mm is indeed fairly drastic.

The 35mm f/1.4G is one of the best 35mm lenses ever made, period. You might get better with a Leica 35mm f/1.4 ASPH Summilux.

The 24mm is excellent as well, great rendering, lovely 3D look. Technically it's corners are weaker than the 35, shrug.

For some technical analysis:

It all depends on your shooting style, if you're already cropping from a 35mm on FX, then moving to a 24mm seems like a silly thing to do.

Alternatively the 17-35mm f/2.8 AF-S, 14-24mm f/2.8 + 35mm f/1.4, and 24-70mm f/2.8 should also be considered.

If you shoot people a 35 is easier to manage IMO of course. I am using the 35 on a d800 and for the most part I'm in 1.2 crop mode. I plan on getting the 28 1.8 as my wide lens. I shoot weddings but if I was a landscape photographer I'm sure I would chose the 24.

It's fairly drastic.

24mm to 35mm is drastic.

400mm to 411mm is minimal.

All depends where that 11mm difference is. Way way way more pronounced in wide angles than telephotos.

That said... they are both good glass and if you loved your 35L as your go-to lens, by all means get the 35 1.4 since you love that focal length. It'll be a straight-across transition. The fact that you said you crop on the 35 too makes that a no-brainer.

Personally I'd want the full set of primes to pick from... 24 35 50 85 and probably a 135 [and a 200 f/2 VRII if you have money burning a hole in your pocket *g*].

Based on pictures I have seen posted recently, I would say both lenses are outstanding. I don't use primes systematically and I am waiting for the 28 1.8, a better intermediate fit as far as I am concerned, and a much cheaper choice. My main lenses are the zoom "quadrilogy". I also use a lot of MF primes for the fun... my favs in that range are the Samyang 35 1.4 and the Voigtlander 40 2.0.
