The D800's built-in HDR

Looks good on my 42 inch monitor
it would have taken me a long time to do this with 2 pictures manually and It would not have been this good

here is another one it was a shade darker I did not even look at it before I posted the first one
The new one is on top

So was it via tone-mapping?

They are? I don't see big monochrome blotches...

I always found it funny that "high dynamic range" is used to refer to a process where you're actually compressing the range in a photograph.

I have 2 calibrated monitors and both of them are not showing the blown highlights. Image looks great to me. I will have to try this feature.

OP, what kind of smoothing did you use?

Actually the HDR process does exactly what it is called - combine multiple images to create a high-dynamic-range image containing a larger range of intensities than possible in a single capture. There is then a separate process called tone mapping which compresses the range in the HDR image to create final low-dynamic-range image. Its a common abuse of terminology to called the final image as HDR, even though the HDR image is the intermediate one which you never directly see.

Was this done with just 2 exposures? Does the D800 allow you to set the number of exposures to be blended into the HDR image? If so, what is the max number of exposures?

Finally, does the D800 save all of the images plus the HDR version separately, or does it just save the one HDR image?

(Sorry for all the questions.)

The only thing that is "blowing" here is your comment.

Okay I guess I have to be the one to settle this. I pulled the image into PS and there are some blown out spots for sure--mainly the bright area of sidewalk against the building in the center of the image. The numbers don't lie.

..and those are the spots with sun on them. Surprise!!! What's the point here? There is tremendous dynamic range in this shot, which, on a camera without an HDR feature would be complete darkness under the tree with a few blown out highlights in the direct sun - or worse.

Do we see that here? No. End of story.

Great shot. Thanks for posting something useful which demonstrates a feature of a new and interesting camera.

Hey, I'm just the messenger here. However, the D800 has such amazing dynamic range that I wonder how much shadow detail could be pulled out of this shot if you exposed for the highlights.

Hey Mike you are just getting caught in the crossfire with Zebra's butt.

However, you do raise a good question. I wonder if the OP is in a position to answer this?
