Looking for pros and cons to the d300s to use as a backup and for keychain photos.

Pros: largely similar control layout, similar ruggedness, same lens compatibility.

Cons: different battery system, different colour output may require different post-processing approach.

I would much rather have a d7000 simply for the battery type. Another plus would be the similarity of the files.

I would reluctantly go with the D7000. I always inadvertently change the mode dial. It's a little small for my hands, but is a great camera with good DR and metering. For the price it's a steal.

I love my D300 & D300s. I have taken pictures in all kinds of light and harsh climatic conditions with no issues. One of my images was displayed as part of a museum exhibit earlier in the year. With this said, I do believe that any camera is preferable to no camera as a backup.

Keychain photos? Why, a PnS will suffice.

But if you must, I really like the Dxxx class of cameras from ergonomics perspective. D7000 is just to rebel-esque.

Why bother about the camera: it's a back-up(for 2 cams) and you probably never gonna use it.

I would go with the d300/s. The shutter lag, black out time, handling of the d7000 is no comparison to d300. Despite dif battery system, the d300 is closer in comparison to the d800 than the other. can pickup a used d300 for about $600. now that's a steal!

Excellent choice unless you want more resolution.

D300 is ok too, but lacks the improved noise performance (slight IMO), and second card slot.

With the D3s you have a FX camera and with the D800 a camera which can function well as either a FX or DX camera. I would want a D700 a a backup to have a high ISO capable camera and one I could use with my FX lenses like the 24-70mm and not have to carry around a 17-55mm zoom for my backup camera.
