Had text messaging updates with Nowinstock.. Got a message D800 was in stock at Target. Ordered for overnight delivery for $17 and change... Hopefully it'll get here tomorrow!

It went out of stock within 20 minutes.

I do hope it shows up. Nikon USA does show that Target is an authorized dealer.

Hopefully I get lucky since this is my bday week! LoL

Most expensive purchase I've ever made with them them!

Thanks for the heads up gshawus!

I find it odd that the big box retailers have better availability than the big photography retailers. I just canceled my order with B&H and Adorama that I placed more then two months ago because my local B&M got me one in a week and half (I placed the order on 4/25). I pick it up Thursday and with a nice weekend on tap, I hope to give it a good run through.

It seems that this time around, Nikon wants to be fair to it's dealers and distribute the D800 to all it's dealers regardless of their business volume.

It's actually screws the big volume dealers like B & H etc...

I got both my D4 and D800E relatively early in this process because of my relationship with my brick and motar local to me dealer. (being NPS kinda helps too but I also know of NPS togs who are still waiting!)

Thanks for posting this! I have a 2/7 Date ordered D800E from Amazon I still havent seen and I'm first on the list at a local shop for a D800E but I dont know that I'll see any of these before my trip to Italy on the 2nd of next month so finally I'm set in stone having a D800 for the trip.

After reading this posting I tried OneCall just for the heck of it and they had the D800 in stock. Ordered, and almost immediately received a call from AmEx to confirm the purchase.

I have a tracking number now ("Shipment information sent to FedEx") for Thursday delivery. Exciting, but I still expect a cancellation; the D800 no longer shows up on the OneCall website, only the D800E...

I think I read on Thom Hogan's site that due to some US law they have to treat all the dealers equally. And ya, that really screws the big shops like B&H.

Would link to article but Thom's site is still in the darkage. :P bythom.com

Quoting said article:

"Here in the US early deliveries for products in shortage are compounded by two things: NPS Priority Purchase (PP) and US law. Nikon did not allocate all of the initial D800's to NPS PP, but this most decidedly took a chunk of cameras from initial US shipments. The two dealers I talked to at length reported a total of 5 NPS PP bodies and 10 for regular sale in their initial shipments. The other aspect—US law—says that you have to treat all dealers on the same contract level equally. If you send 4 units to dealer #1, you have to send 4 units to dealer #2 through n. (Yes, there are few things that modify this slightly, like a dealer being on credit hold, but overall, NikonUSA appears to follow the letter of this law.) "

One of the major "few little things" in the above quote is that all of those dealers have to have an order in to Nikon USA for 4 units or 3 or 2 or 1, whatever. As we are starting to see evidence that some bodies are in fact sitting on shelves, at least temporarily, at various mom and pops. The little shops are not going to be able to finance additional inventory. Thom's reference to credit hold. For everyone of those shops, a big store like B&H gets more inventory.

Thirty days from now, I would not be surprised to see a lot, not all by any means, of this backup gone.

The mom-and-pop's by me are requiring a non-refundable $300 deposit to get on their waiting list. If you don't pick up the camera when it comes in, you lose your deposit.
