p.1 #1 · Never saw nothing like this

Hi Folks,
This is a series of shots taking a several years back in my back yard.
I was waiting for a Green Heron that was coming down the shore line when I caught an erratic movement out the corner of my eye. Out on the peninsula something was flaying in the grass. Aiming my 600/4 at the location told me it was a dove in trouble. While watching it through my lens another head came in on the right side of my view finder. It was a blue Heron.
Thanks for looking, Rick

1. Blue Heron appears in my view finder.

2. Stabs bird and picks it up.

3. Squeezing it to death.

5. At this point the heron went down to the water and keep soaking the bird to saturate the feathers.

6. After about 30 minutes of soaking and trying to get the shoulders of the dove into it's jaws the heron finally succeeded.

Interesting sequence. Doesn't surprise me though, I know of someone who witnessed a GBH waiting for, catching, and eating a gopher.
Thanks for sharing.

Crimony, GB Herons will eat anything. And their jaws of death must be quite strong. Cool stuff Rick!

That is an awesome set!!

I never would have thought about a Heron eating another bird, but then, I never would have thought it smart enough to soak it to get it down its gullet!!!!

Great!!

Nice behavioural documentation. The light in the last is nice for an excellent portrait. It is amazing what a GBH can swallow whole. Saw a video of one swallowing a whole muskrat once.

Really neat behavioral sequencing. I knew they ate a lot more than fish and lizards but that was very interesting.

Protein is protein...but it is always a bit difficult watching animals eating members of their own type.

Fantastic series, and that shot with the collared dove in the FG is quite poignant

Great set.

I've seen a great white egret do the "stab / squeeze / dunk / eat" behaviour before, but on a frog rather than on another bird.
