hello,
Throughout this summer i want to revamp my Macbook but need help.
I want to get a setup similar to one i saw on YouTube and also Adam Lerner, where the HDD is replaced for a larger faster one, and the CD slot is replaced with a SSD. The HDD is used for holding files and pictures, yet the computer is run off the SSD, as in Operating system, and other essential computer files.
Yet i am not quite sure how to set all this up...
Help
Which model Macbook do you have...changing the HD to ssd is quite easy...and there is a unit that holds the ssd and fits in the dvd slot...I'd suggest you visit http://www.macsales.com/
I've done exactly that, except that I use the large regular HD for system and the SSD is secondary.
The exact procedure depends on your specific MB type, I think. In a nutshell, you remove the CD player, replace it with a frame that you can purchase for example from OWC and put the second HD in it. The frame includes the appropriate connector, so you just reconnect the cables you disconnected from the CD. The frame came with some tools, that should cover all types of MBs. I used my own screwdrivers (Philips 00 is all I needed, IIRC). There is more if you want to run the system from the second drive. Take a look at the OWC web site, I believe they have instructions there.
I am curious why you chose to use the SSD for things other than the system? Conventional wisdom would say that the many small files and caches the OS constantly accesses are perfect for speeding up via an SSD.
Hello, I am currently looking for a new grinder for my coffee machine, do you guys have any suggestions? I was thinking of replacing my Rancilio Silva.
Man, I am so happy to be part of a forum where you can post ANYTHING and get away with it.
Henrik, I agree in principle, but I don't think this thread will create a snowball effect or anything to water down the essence of this forum.
Someone opened a thread here about LCD screens some time ago and I commented that it would be more appropriate in the Post-processing & Printing forum (where screens are actively discussed), but I haven't seen a single thread about LCDs here since.
No worries Aham; I just lash out every now and then to make it clear where I stand on diluting the forum with posts that are not even remotely connected to Alt gear. This thread is a very generic computer set up question, which should be removed to a more appropriate forum.
For what I know he could have posted this across the whole FM in hope of getting a response somewhere, regardless of whether he was posting in the right forum or not.
If so, it is the kind of lazy behavior I detest.
I think the first reply in the thread was excellent. It should have stopped at that.
FWIW I agree with a pure alt focus, as I have abundantly shown with my hostile and tremendously unpopular policing of Canon-Canon (and theoretically Nikon-Nikon, although that barely seems to happen for some reason) postings, but whatever I am on the verge of giving it up, as frustrated as I am about it. In reality, there are less and less threads I read now, currently somewhere between 12 and 20, and I usually dip into new threads once or twice to see what is going on. If there was a "Hide Me" button for threads (which I have actually suggested to Fred), then my front page would be 2/3 empty.
Some of the old folks have left already, and I can see why. I think the Alt Forum peaked a few years ago and now that it is becoming more and more diluted there are other forums out there.
I am not considering myself a very active contributor to the Alt forum as I have been photographically dormant for years but it is partly because I feel less and less inclined to contribute in a forum which is vaning rather than waxing and I have better channels for discussing photo related stuff and/or running thoughts by others. I keep most of my posting here through PM already.
Most of the members here I have a great deal of respect for as well as admiration. Now that I am mostly a weekend warrior on the forum I feel I have little time to browse through the Alt threads and when I do I have to sift to a lot more unrelated stuff than I had to before.
I have left the Alt forum before, never in anger but more in disappointment. The forum is not static and my coming and going is purely based on the content of the forum and not the people here.
The days when the alternative image thread was one of the most active threads are definitely gone. We see less varied stuff being used and gained LOTS of new members who shoot ZE/ZF lenses or an M9+M lenses, and more recently, NEX. Overall, there is not much to be excited about anymore, IMO.
I'm now planning to explore timelapse photography a bit. There are so many cool possibilities there and creative people showing new things, so I'm going to see if it's something for me.
[/end derail thread]
lmao, you guys are great.
I'm sorry i really didn't know which forum to put this question in, I'll try a little harder next time to think it through to which forum to use.
Thank you for the feedback.
And yes, the macbook makes a great camera, who needs 36mp which you can get 2mp =)

1. Space considerations. I used small 15k RPM or SSD drives for system disk before, but always got into trouble with space. My system disk is pretty fast and application or system start on the MBP never bothered me.
2. I actually use it for system, I use it, besides else, to run Windows under Parallels. I also tried it for LR catalog, but I did not see any performance benefit.

i agree, i have two 1 terabyte drives in my 5 year old macbook pro (due for an upgrade this summer). SSD just doesn't give me enough storage.
i also agree that this thread doesn't belong in this forum, though henrik and carsten do sound a bit like old men yelling at kids to get off their cyberlawn.
