All: D200 + 80-400 VR @ 400mm, ISO 800, 1/125, f8, fill flash (SB910 + Better Beamer)

I took this yesterday at the sun set behind clouds at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge here in New York City. I was expecting to photograph a routine landing and had no idea I would capture this event.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Cool captures, Morris. Of course I would prefer the action was frozen or else video, but that is just because I am not a fan of blur in still photos. That does not mean I don't get it in my shots, just that I screwed up.

You like to take a different view of things Morris. This set reflects your thinking. I like #2 best.

I'm not sure that you were trying to get the artsy effect or not.

I always love the landing shots and when the geese and swans start fighting.

Thanks for sharing all the time.

Morris,
I like the way the blur catches the motion and drama of the antagonistic interaction of the two geese. I think you timed it just right to maximize the motion blur to show the energy, but still capturing enough head detail to clearly show the hostility of the bird in the attack mode. I see the 3 frames as a series--a set--not a as a pick-and-choose collection of 3 independent images.

Looks like the goose on the left is going after the other goose- aggressively.
I'm assuming the extent of the blur wasn't intended, but no matter- it's a good action series of goose behavior at this time of year.
I like it.

Thank you Tony,

I was after blur and panning with the bird on the left in the first image. I had no idea that I would capture this near miss. If I knew I’d have tried for a higher shutter speed though with my equipment and the light it might not have worked.

Thank you Martines,

I was shooting artsy low light show shutter and was as surprised as the geese when they discovered they had both chosen the same spot to land on this windless day.

Thank you John,

You are correct this is 3 of 4 frames from a burst. I was expecting a much simpler landing with artistic blur when the bird on the right came out of no ware.

Thank you Charlie,

This is the result of a windless evening so the geese were not landing into the wind; they simply can in where they wanted to. These 2 geese were doing that and I was following the one on the left in for a nice artistic blurred landing and surprise to all three of us when they nearly collided. The goose I followed in exhibited road rage after it nearly flipped over avoiding the collision. Notice how the one that came from the right lifted its foot to let the other slide under.
