p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Gulls playing catch with rocks (9)

I've been watching gulls lately. Still working on a set of the mating habits shot last saturday.

Saw them playing with rocks yesterday. Something I've not seen before. They would pick up rocks, either off the pier or from under water, and then fly up into the air. 20 or 30 feet up they would drop them then swoop down and catch them again, or try. The best I saw was one gull who managed 3 catches before losing the pebble in the river.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour before?

Not the greatest quality images and for that I apologize. Just wanted to share a behaviour I've not seen before.

George

George. An interesting set, Well done.. You might like to look at a study done on this behavior. They tested several hypotheses and concluded it was indeed play, http://wmpeople.wm.edu/asset/index/dacris/gambleandcristol2002

Very interesting. I love gulls, many people find them a nuisance but I can sit and watch them for hours.

This is unusual George. Usually gulls drop shells onto the rocks like that to break them. Could they be dropping the rocks onto shells?

I read the study. Thanks for the link. I too would think they were playing. There were a lot of them doing it. It was warm and the wind was reasonably stiff with a fair amount of 'stationary' flying going on.

Nah! We're 10km upriver from the plant.

Nope. No clams around. They were doing this over the pier and over the water adjacent. No feeding going on at all.

I took my girlfriend home to start supper and went back 15 minutes later and it was all over. They were sitting around looking bored or preening.

It had been pretty serene when I was down at the river earlier that morning though.
