I've been watching gulls lately. Still working on a set of the mating habits shot last saturday.
Saw them playing with rocks yesterday. Something I've not seen before. They would pick up rocks, either off the pier or from under water, and then fly up into the air. 20 or 30 feet up they would drop them then swoop down and catch them again, or try. The best I saw was one gull who managed 3 catches before losing the pebble in the river.
Has anyone else seen this behaviour before?
Not the greatest quality images and for that I apologize. Just wanted to share a behaviour I've not seen before.
The following are consecutive frames. In the first, both birds are carrying rocks.
4. The drop
5. The catch
8. going, going, ....
9. gone! Missed that one.
