p.1 #1 · Surfin' Bird

A couple more images from Crystal Cove State Park. At one spot along the walk, a small group of surfbirds was working the water's edge. This one hopped up on a rock, and provided a possibly excellent photo op. I tried timing waves and bird movement to get a profile shot at the same time there was big splash. Alas, the profile had no splash. In those with good water drama, the bird kept gazing out to sea. Here are to of the better surf images.

7D with 400mm f5.6, handheld.

1. Vertical - The bird cooperated a bit on this one. Good splash, and a slight head turn so there is some eye/beak in the image.

2. Horizontal - I like the water action better on this one, but the bird was staring off intently, and would not turn his/her head for the peak action.

Thanks for stopping in for a look. Comment away!

Ken

Hey Ken...first off, my math while rusty still is pretty good...I only see 1 shot
Secondly, it looks like YOU are about to take a bath in that spray and wave....a cool looking image.
Eric
Well the second image popped up after I posted...I have plenty of fingers and toes to count to two multiple times )

It is really very simple Eric. There are THREE kinds of people. Those who can count and those who cannot!

I think the second makes for a stronger image Ken. The fact that bird is looking into the action and the action is going on all around the bird makes my eye focus on the action. In the first the shot is too tight for the action to be high lighted so my eye goes to the bird with week eye contact. The second shot is action and works and the first is frustrating that the bird's head isn't turned more. Just my opinion

Nice shots Ken, #2 is my fav here.

But when are we going to see some Edmonton birds?

I like the second shot best. Notice that whenever a bird has its back to you that you can almost always see one eye, and it can see you.

2 is much more dramatic Ken. The wider crop just shows more action ~ Ron

You must have been looking right when I hit the post button Eric. I had a look and for some reason one didn't show, so it was in there in about 10 seconds. Anyway, I wish the bird stayed there a bit longer. I'm sure could have got more of a profile eventually.

Excellent comments Tim. I agree the first is a bit too tight, and I prefer the horizontal one too.
