p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D4 (and maybe D800) focus priority issues

Hi folks,

Anyone with a D4 (or perhaps a D800) that wouldn't mind testing something out for me? It seems, that focus priority is being ignored on my D4 when I have:
- A1 set to Focus
- A2 set to Focus
- A3 set to Off
- A4 Off (AF-ON only).
- AF-S or AF-C
- using a 24-70 AFS to test.

A) If I manually defocus the lens, and press AF-ON, the camera will auto-focus and fire when the frame is in focus (green dot). This is as expected.

B) If I manually defocus the lens, and press AF-ON, while holding the focus ring (so that the frame is out of focus with no green dot), the camera will also fire. This might be expected?

C) If I manually defocus the lens, and without touching AF-ON, I can depress the shutter and it will fire (ie. the frame is out of focus). This is NOT as expected.

Can anyone confirm this behaviour with their camera?

I also tried this with my D700, and A) and B) were the same, but C) was different.

Hi,

I can confirm that focus priority does NOT work on my D4 in AF-S.

There are threads on this at most of the other forums. Hopefully something that will be fixed in firmware 1.01.

It really make me wonder who they have test these bodies. Of a D4 or the comparable Canon "focus" is so key in terms of speed and reliability. These are action cameras - focus is what they need to do. How could they have missed that between the combinations in AF-S and AF-C, shutter and focus priority only 3/4 work?

Thanks Steve,

I updated my post - I'm seeing the behaviour in both AF-S and AF-C.

When you say it doesn't work, do you have autofocus engaged? Ie. are you experiencing the same as I am in terms of A), B) and C)? or just a subset of those?

Are you planning, or have you contacted Nikon?

I've also replied to the "other forums" threads, but to be honest, there have been so many replies, and it's been hard to get through the muck.

I just threw a 24-70 on my D4 and tested. I don't have an issue. Just got D4 last week.

A) Works as expected.

B) Works as expected.

C) Mine locked focus and fired in both AF-S and AF-C.

Firmware on camera is:

A: 1.00
B: 1.00
L: 1.004

Not familiar with the L bucket of firmware. Thought it was usual A and B banks?

Thanks for the reply utildayael.

Do you have A4 set to AF-ON only? If so, and you're doing scenario C), I don't think the camera should fire since the frame is out of focus, and you haven't engaged autofocus. Mine fires, and I get an OOF image.

You might have have A4 set to shutter+AF-ON, in which case, you would have pressed the shutter, the camera would have acquired focus, and fired the frame (which is what you described).

Was I clear in my explanation? :P

If the AF-ON button is used for autofocus activation only and not the shutter, the focus priority doesn´t work.
This happens with the D800, too.
Nikon Europe confirms this and it should be changed with the next firmware-update.
If you are using the shutter to activate the AF, focus priority will work.

This video shows the behavior using a D800.

Btw., this video is not made by me.

Hi,

I should have been more specific. On my D4 focus priority does not work when focusing with the AF-ON button in AF-S mode.

Focus priority does work when the shutter release button is used to focus.

I submitted this last week via a form at the support.nikonusa.com website. I haven't heard back so it is likely time to make a call to confirm that it is a known issue.

(L) is referring to the lens correction database for in camera correction. it is updateable on occasion
1- Shooting Menu
2- Auto Distortion Control

To my understanding, "C" above is supposed to be a manual de-focus of the lens with no autofocus so how could it be "locking focus" for you? Or maybe I read the original post wrong.

Yes, I know that.

I'm referring to the original poster's letter "C" in his first post.

Interesting to say the least. I would like to see more owners test this. Serial Number 200X. I don't own a 24-70 2.8G. Mine works as it should on the following lenses:

Nikon 14-24 2.8G
Nikon 24 1.4G
Nikon 35 1.4G
Nikon 50 1.4G
Nikon 50 1.8G
Nikon 85 1.4G
Nikon 105 2.8 Macro
Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII

Are you sure about that? That would be very surprising if so. To do the test you need to make sure you have A1 and A2 set to focus priority, and A4 set for off which is AF-ON only. So when you manually defocus the lens and press the shutter (without touching AF-ON), if things are working properly it will NOT fire.

My D800 works as the OP suggests, almost as if the AF-ON only setting disregards the focus priority settings. Seems like a firmware tweak is needed.

Let me double check to make sure AF-C was set to focus priority.

Ya you hit it exactly. When I set it like you noted I had same results which matches what gikoh said below too.

I'm doing the exact same with settings provided and mine does not fire.
