Mount Olivet cemetery dates to the 1850s. On a gorgeous spring afternoon, the sounds of a minor league baseball game in full swing next door lightened the otherwise somber mood.

Quite a few Confederate Civil War graves, mostly casualties from Antietam and Monocacy (“the battle that saved Washington”). Confederate dead were hastily buried at Antietam, and then reinterred at Mount Olivet after the bones began surfacing in farmers’ fields. The front row of headstones, barely readable today, appears to be the originals.
