This little guy was jumping around the cedars outside my kitchen window and the kids were pretty excited. I promised I'd try and find out what type of bird it is. Any ideas?
Gene i'm not 100% positive but I'm thinking a female Ruby Crowned Kinglet , however one of the wing bars is pretty faint or almost non existent. nice capture though.alan
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, as the others have said. Don't bother trying to determine sex; males and females are very similar and you'd need a close inspection of the crown feathers (normally tucked out of sight). Actually, based on date it may be more likely to be male.
Geez, I knew I came to the right place "Ruby crowned" makes sense, not shown in this shot is a small red tuft that stuck up now and again, but didn't make into this photo. Timing is everything. And you can't even tell how dirty my kitchen window is from this shot, another bonus.
Thanks everyone for the help and kind words. You've inspired me to possibly venture out to Pelee Island soon for the migration festivities.
