p.1 #1 · Patagonia's carretera austral: two photographers and three systems

Some time ago, Boris (Bobu) invited me to join him on a trip to Chile's wonderful Torres del Paine natural park. Alas, an unspeakably careless tourist set fire to part of it, ruining this location for decades. Boris then switched the project to driving along Chil's North-South Carretera Austral for some ten days.
My contribution to the trip was three-fold: speak some Spanish, which helped in a very sparsely populated area, where English or Germa speakers were rarer still, share the cost of the trip with him, and most importantly, make his pictures look even more amazing when displayed in comparison with mine than on their own.
Actually, Boris, is a super fellow as well as a great photographer, the trip was mind-blowing, and I want to thank him and congratulate him publicly for organising everything, and for being the person he is.

On the photo side, Boris brought 2 M9s, and a selection of the best Leica glass.
I wanted to bring my Canon 5D II, but managed to get a 5D III a day before departure. Not wanting to risk too much on a new and untested body, I also brought the 5D II as backup. The same applied to getting a NEX 7, and I brought along my trusty NEX 5N as backup. So my bag with 4 bodies and 9 lenses (4 ZEs for the 5D, 2 ZMs, 2 Contax Gs, a Leica R) for the NEX) was twice as heavy as his...

As it turned out, we rarely shot exactly the same subjects the same way with the same focal lengths. Boris' average FL was around 21mm, whereas I had nothing wider than 25, and averaged around 30mm. So I will let Boris, who created this opportunity and organised everything, post his pics (he shot around twice as much as I did), and show mine either when they are different enough to be interesting, or similar enough that the differences between systems can be telling.

We will post each day of the trip, the first day starting in Coyhaique/Balmaceda, and heading sough, towards Caleta Tortel and Rio Puerto Yungay.

Boris, the floor is yours, let the show begin!

Philip and Boris -- Great shots! You both have some winners.

Was Boris using a GND filter on some of those?

What can you say about the PP, and why the Leica looks so different from the Canon/Zeiss?

Very nice Philippe and Boris!

Philippe, it would be interesting to read a bit about how you managed working with two systems throughout the trip, where you felt the strengths of one was an advantage over the other, any problems or annoyances, etc... And as an M9 shooter, I'd be very curious to read Boris's experience with it as his sole system. In a similar circumstance, I'd probably find myself missing the flexibility of a longer focal length zoom, such as a 70-300L or similar.

Of course, I'd be happy to wait until after the presentation of the images is complete.

Boris, stunning work. You're a credit to Leica.

Philber, it seems like you're bumping against some of the dynamic range of the 5D Mk2 in some of those shots? Looks amazing though.

This is on my list of places to go... perhaps right after Vietnam/Thailand.

I'm speechless.

The pictures are great, especially first two by Boris,
but I had no idea what happened in Torres del Paine NP
I hope you're wrong, the damage might be overgrown quite quickly,
I don't remember many old trees, mostly bushes and grass.
My trip there a few years back was amazing and I wanted to come back
with a better camera and better skills.

The bright side is you guys are showing us another interesting
location, I never heard of. Very, very nice, love the color palette
in the sunrise photos.

A side question for Boris as those lenses are quite new - how
would you compare the SE 21 and the 18?

Thanks Nozzleforward, Dalmas, Crazeazn, Gunzorro and Ron.

@Gunzorro: yes I used very often a GND (Cokin A, because Lee are too large for the M9 System) and often in addition (or instead) the digital GND function of LR, which I really love. I think the different look between Philippes and my images is mainly based on different PP (I prefer images with strong colors and high contrast) .

@Ron: when I'm finished with my images (which will probably take another week) I will write something about my experience with the M9 as a landscape camera system.

Thanks FlyPenFly and Andrew.

Andrew, the 21 SE is compared to the 18 SE slightly better in every aspect. Especially wide open the corner sharpness of the 21 SE is nearly perfect, while you have to stop down the 18 SE for perfect corner sharpness.
But the 18 SE is not a bad lens and it is significantly wider than the 21 SE.
If I had to choose between these two lenses I would clearly take the 21 SE.

Nice set and Patagonia is skyrocketing on my must see list. The 18mm M9 1.2 Reserva Nacional Cerro Castillo @sunrise is truly a spectacular shot and the 25mm comparison with the 5D II is somewhat shocking. Were both shots taken with NGD filters? I think the 5D II shot in particular is in dire need of Photoshop work. The shadow details are definitely in the pic but it needs pulling out with Photoshop.

In any case if 1.2 was mine it would be hanging big on a wall. Kudos...

Thank you, philber and Bobu. I was already expecting this thread, as it was mentioned in another thread. The images/views appear breathtaking, and it was a pleasure to learn about the story behind the trip (with philber's excellent humour).

Looking forward to the next instalment.

Thanks Boris, I just got my SE 21 and was wondering if I need to get the 18 as well
I'm interested in the potential of the Leica M system as a landscape camera too.
I was intrigued by the difference, but following the comment by Boris about PP,
I quickly played with the first sunrise image by Philippe and I think if you want to,
you can pull more saturation and punch from those files.
If you did the double exposure for the sky, which I always prefer to the grads,
it would be more successful. 2nd RAW processing just for the sky would do it too.
I hope he doesn't mind my quick attempt, obviously it's based on his lowrez JPEG...

Amazing...great shots, with great equipment, from a great location from two masters. I'm looking forward to more...

Also, very interesting to see the impact of the different approaches to PP.

Excellent work guys. It brings back memories as I have driven this road twice. Did you reach Villa O'Higgins?

No, we went back at Puerto Yungay due to our very limited amount of time and our plans to also visit Caleta Tortel, the Valle Exploradores and the Pumalin NP.
At the northern end we returned at Caleta Gonzalo. Most people we met on our trip were rather spending several month there and not only 10 days. A lot of them even with their own car/truck(which they had shipped from Europe).

And thanks Uzay, Dave, Jaakko, Carsten, CVickery.
