I recently spent several days near Canadian, TX photographing lesser prairie chickens. These are extremely elusive birds which live their entire life within a small radius of their lek. Early each morning (before daylight) the roosters gather on the lek, play "prairie chicken games" and wait for a hen to make an appearance, hopefully with breeding on her mind. The roosters then put on quite show which is most interesting to watch. By mid morning, all of the chickens return to the prairie and become almost invisible for the rest of the day. Prairie chickens can not live in captivity; and while very hearty in their ability to withstand harsh conditions, they are very sensitive to changes in their environment. If their lek is destroyed, they will no longer breed and will eventually die out. Due to a rapid distraction of their habitat, their future is not very bright.
Because of poor lighting conditions, most of these images were captured at ISO 2000 with a Canon 7D with a Canon EF 500/4 lens wide open. Thanks for looking.
