My favorite butte is in southern Utah. I like the starkness. The butte is largely of mancos shale which is high in selenium and very little will grow in this soil. In addition this is a dry and harsh land.

Hey Jim,

Very nicely done. I really like the level of detail that you got in these. #1 and 2 are my favorite shots here.

Well done.

Jim

Nice series, Jim. The second is my pick, due to light on the butte and the skeleton...great composition. The butte looks familiar, but they all run together in my memory (along with everything else). Big Water?

I like number two. Anytime you can make a skeleton work in the desert...

Three has a few too many bones, and they are too scattered.

I like #2 and #3 (apart from the dust bunnies along the top).

The butte in #1 and #4 seems a bit soft.

Which butte is this? I've seen so many that I forget their names ...

Nice set. My favorite is #3 for the nice color. It has a beautiful reddish tone. And I think the composition of this one is the best of the bunch.

Hi
This is very beautiful composition specially #2. I have been to Southern Utah numerous time but don't remember seeing this particular butte. Would you mind sharing this location?.

The mancos shale buttes are located west of Hanksville and cover many square miles. The largest is called Factory Butte. There are many smaller ones. Unfortunately many have also been torn up by ATVs.

I'm looking at these again on my computer. The first time I commented, I was viewing the photos on my Kindle Fire. I still like #3 the best. Another aspect of the composition that I noticed this time is the way a "trail of bones" seems to enter the frame from the lower left, leading your eye to the butte in the background.

#3 is my fav, #1 is close behind though (is it level?)

No 3 though does need a couple of dust bunnies cleaning up!

Dust bunnies have been an endless problem ever since my weeks in Death Valley and 3 sand storms. I also found that my monitor was so dirty I have been overlooking them. Thanks to those who mentioned them. I guess it is time for my 4th wet sensor cleaning in the last couple of months.

This reminds me of 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick film -- think back to early moments with apes tossing bones about in a barren landscape)

Like it.

I kinda guessed it was in that area ... I've driven to Factory Butte and it looks similar to the Caineville Wash badlands area at the end of the Cathedral Valley loop.

Hired Goon,
Today I was driving around Green River. There are also many similar buttes in that area and also east towards Grand Junction. No shortage of buttes in southern Utah.
