Jorgen, those samples could be lacking if just the Nikon 18-55 VR kit lens was used (though I'm not sure what lenses were used in the samples you saw). If you read the Dpreview review, the 24mp sensor is quite demanding and produces nice results if better lenses are used.

They are on a roll with D800(E) and this "entry level" camera. MSRP of $699.95, NEX7 sensor I guess? And $1000 less than XP1... wow

Hmmm I was under the impression that such a low spec DSLR wouldn't have a market in this day of mirrorlesses. I wonder if this will be their last one then? Or am I crazy and the mirrorless folks are just obscuring my view? [HEY! Down in front!!] I keep thinking that about 80% of new camera buyers spending less than $1.5k or so are buying mirrorless cameras (Sony, Fuji, Oly, Pana, Sam, Ric, etc. ) . I guess that could be true even in light of these poll results: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1105747/0 which did actually take me by surprise. I guess it could be tho that most of those folks are the high dollar high spec buyers and it's still the case that budgeteers are mostly buying mirrorless? No? Maybe? <shrug> I wouldn't actually count on Nikon making the right marketing move in such a case... they'er always late for supper and half the time showing up in the wrong room.

Nikon doesn't have a mirrorless competitor (the 1 series sells into a different segment), so they're still in the low-end DSLR market for the forseeable future. Note Canon did not refresh the Rebel T3 when the T4i was introduced.

There's still a market for low-end DSLR-sized bodies, I personally just expect it to move over to Mirrorless mounts. We're still in the early days, only Panasonic really offers a DSLR-alike experience new for similar price to a low-end DSLR (I don't count the Sony SLT's since they remain in a DSLR mount, they're an interim step at the low-end of the market IMHO)

True... How about the OM-D? I count that as a DSLR-like experience. I guess Oly will keep going in that direction?

I thought it is using the same sensor as NEX-7, but the base ISO looks very soft comparatively, stronger AA filter?

Looking at the raw test samples at Imaging-Resource taken with what looks like the 60 2.8 Micro Nikkor, the D3200 does not appear to have the per pixel sharpness of the NEX-7. The file does react well to sharpening though.

The sensor in the D3200 performs almost identical to the one in the NEX-7 according to DxOMark (which does not take into account resolution) and even though the die has a Nikon stamp on it, it's almost certainly the same basic Sony sensor.

DSLR-alike experience, but not in competition with low-end DSLR's due to the price (it's priced comparable to a D7000, not a D3200).
