p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Golden Sunset

Here is a shot from last week. Tuan Le went along and we explored this new area for us along the coast between Corona Del Mar and Crystal Cove. It's an area where the tide cuts off access on a daily basis, so to safely get in and out one has to watch the tides, plus trying to get that access to time with the setting of the sun. I really liked the way the setting sun was turning the rocks a real golden color as the light reflects off of it.

#1 is uncropped

#2 is a 4:5 format crop

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Jim,

Love #2. I think the crop gives clear lines from the nice wave motion to the setting sun. Great job on picking the sun as it just drops slightly at the cloud level. Not sure if it would've been as good if the sun hit the horizon. Good decision!

Hey Jason,

Thanks so much. Yeah, I shot it all the way until it went down, but there actually was only a small window where it was out, as there is a thicker band of clouds along the horizon, so this was about all I got with the direct sunlight. If you look along the left edge you can see better that lower set of clouds.

Great shot Jim. I'm not sure which one I like better. I love the wave action and golden rocks though. I was just there myself last week.

Dang Jim, you took my spot and you've got better timing too with all those golden colors. I think the crop edges out slightly for me with the foreground water movement and highlights being shown off more. Pretty nice with the water trickling down the rocks on the upper right side too.

Jim,
I prefer #2 , the crop makes the fg more prononced and since the fg is really neat with the beautiful light and rushing water it adds so much to the shot. Excellent job here ! Dean

Great shots Jim. I normally don't care for square crops but this one really works. It keeps the best, rejects the rest. I also like the shutter speed here that retains water detail.

#2 for me as well. The emphasis on the foreground works well here. Looks like an interesting place to shoot. Don't really have anything quite like that around where I live in Wisconsin. - Paul

I like them both, Jim. Not sure which I like better. Both are very fine examples of beach sunsets. Rivk

Love them both. Even though they are the same image, both seem to impart a little different feeling. Super shot!

#1 for me. Like the lighting in the clouds. 2 feels just a little tight at the top.

Hi Jim, excellent shots both!

I prefer #2 slightly.

Was the second 4x5 crop in-camera raw? Were you trying that?

I love them both, but the crop on #2 really makes the picture a portrait.

Smokin' shots man - I think #2 by a hair, but both are wall hangers to be sure.

Very nice shots... I prefer the first because I like seeing more clouds.

#2 for me Jim. A touch more intimate, but all the cool elements intact.

A beautiful scene. You timed the water flow so well.
I prefer the wider view in 1.
