This is a weird phenomena I've encountered lately. My 7D drains batteries at idle. I insert a full battery and the next day it is empty without taking a single shot. It happens with two batteries - one Canon and one replacement - so I'm confident it's not the batteries fault. Last fact, I have used all for about two years without any issues.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Hi Yakim,

I had the exact same problem on my 7D. Had to send it into Canon as it was a problem in the camera. Under warranty luckily.

I had the same problem and, it turned out, both Canon batteries were hosed albeit barely one year old. I bought a couple Sterlingtreks and all was well.

You bought what? Even Google doesn't know what they are.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Thanks for the info. I'll call the lab.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Sterlingtrek are the ones they use on the SS Enterprise.

So this is a batery problem and not camera problem?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I have a brand new 3rd prty batt that does this in my IIn, glad its the batt and not the body.

Might be the battery is on the way out. What is the "Recharge performance" on the battery?

You can find out in "Menu" > Battery info.

My current one is 2 out of 3. I don't get as much shots out of it, but it still lasts a long time. With the way I shoot, I get over a week out of it. Probably could get 1k clicks.

I think it's unlikely that both batteries are on the way out simultaneously. And when I press any button, nothing happens. Only the empty battery icon flashes.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Yakim, I wish I had an answer for you. I know that camera problems are frustrating as hell.

I only was commenting on the brand of battery a poster previous to me mentioned.

Recharge performance is 2 bars in the aftermarket battery and 3 bars in the Canon one. Seems fine.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Thank you. Happy shooting to you to.

Also, in other cameras, the battery may be the problem, but with mine. I tried three different batteries, ended up the camera.

I think you have the beginnings of this problem...it is a known problem to Canon but they will not admit it - free repair if under warranty; about $240 USD if past the one year warranty time frame (charge is for labor/tax and shipping but no charge for parts).

Yakim, I had this happen with a 1-series camera. I had been storing it with a teleconverter attached and the battery would drain in a few hours. It turns out the teleconverter was bad and draining the battery in the camera. The camera and battery where fine. Canon repaired the teleconverter under warranty. So make sure you try storing it with no lens on or at least try a different lens.

This is extremely strange but it seems that - despite doing absolutely nothing - the problem is gone. Both batteries went from 100% to 99% after ~24h. BTW, the lens attached - at all times - was/is the 17-55/2.8 IS. I'm happy of course, but puzzled as well.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

My friend's 7D has the common problem that the 7D reports an error that the camera can not communicate with the battery. The camera can still work but the battery will get run down overnight if left in camera, even with the camera turned off. So you have to remove the battery each time after shooting and then put it back in before shooting again. They are going to send in the camera and hopefully I have heard, that Canon will fix it with no charge. Some battery compartment problem.

The same thing happened to me. I cleaned the battery contacts inside the camera body and it went away.
Use medical type Q-tips and rubbing alcohol.
