Good to hear.

How close do you have to be to someone (say, the first photo posted or the artist) for this framing to work on the 24?

It looks like a lot less than 50 feet, and I don't normally get that close to people...

the first photo posted, probably 6 feet I was sitting in the middle of the square hoping something interesting would happen close to me. I turned around and saw them getting ready to kiss, had only one chance, and got lucky to get the shot.

for the Artist, I shot from the hip... My estimate would be about 3-4 feet..I shot from the hip as to not have him look at the camera.
After fhooting this way for a while you get a feel for the distance and know when to press the shutter.

Wonderful images. Did you make any perspective correction in post? Columns in the basilica look very close to perpendicular. Thanks.

I'm glad that someone posted this thread in another post.

I'm going to Italy in September and I was debating what lens to take with my D7K, and you just answered my question.

It will be my Tokina F4 12 - 24 and my Nikon 18-200 just in case.

Best regards

Eltano

incredible.. thanks for sharing !
one question.. did you stage some of the scenes or did you just "happen" to take them and compose as you were walking around ?

these are wonderful. I am curious what other focal lengths you took and when did you find the 24 was a bit too wide?
did you use any filters?

anyway, thanks so much for sharing. great shots

none of the pics were staged, the first one with the couple kissing happened while I was sitting in the middle of the plaza. At the end of the day after walking countless hours through Florence the wife and I decided to take a hot chocolate break in the plaza, while the wife was finishing up her hot chocolate I walked over to the middle of the plaza and sat on the ground with my feet crossed and just sat there and waited to see if anything interesting would happen around me. Well, within a couple of minutes of sitting there I looked behind me and saw the couple... photo taken...

as for the rest, I would encounter them while walking the streets and alleys of Italy...

rbranan,
I took the 16-35, 24 1.4 and 105 2.5 ais..
about 10 photos taken with the 16-35 and probably about 5 with the 105 .
Basically I liked the look the 24 gave me and left it on the camera.
Even when I tried to use the other lenses, the 24 always made it's way back on the camera.

Michael, in the spirit of self-improvement and joy in photography, I've decided to take up your challenge. My 24/1.4 is in the mail.

Now I just need to figure out how to sneak up to within 20 feet of people...

Rodolfo,
You will find that it is as challenging as getting a good shot with a SuperTele.
A couple of weeks before I left for Italy, I grabbed the D700 and 24 1.4, went out to Downtown Miami and took some practice shots. That's when the love affair with the 24 started....
If you want to try
out the 24, you are in Weston which is very close to me....
