Here is one of the first 10 flight frames I got with the 5D3. A white-tailed Kite is a very tough subject and cameras with lesser AF usually struggle to lock focus in flight against varied BGs. The 5D3 AF tracking seems to do a good job so far. As expected the image quality is the best in Canon lineup. I still need to experiment more with the AF to form a final opinion. One thing I noticed is that the servo drive and the initial lock-on speed-especially with TC-is not as fast as 1D4 due to the lower power battery pack, so sometimes you need to plan ahead. Shutter lag is also noticeably slower compared to the 1D, and generally it is just not as fast in various operations but we that is expected given the price. It's a very nice camera overall and a joy to use. I like the feel of the shutter, soft release and quiet.

5D3 700mm f/5.6 1/3200sec ISO 800. I actually underexposed this one by one stop but it recovered nicely in post.

I think that canon may sell quite a few of these camera's once they get the initial bugs out.

very nice pics. I am more interested in your over all view of the camera especially tracking when there is background. I currently use 7D and I have read your review and in complete agreement on focus tracking abilities (or lack of). Only reason I am still using it is the discouraging weight of 1 series. mkIII seems a reasonable compromise.

I haven't used a 1DX yet, I will share my findings when I get one

Hi there, overall it's a great camera. totally different league in terms of AF performance compared to 7D. It's quite light too (w/o the grip).
