Wow I made this post 2 months ago and totally forgot that I had!
Thank you so much for your feedback! It's very interesting how differently everyone works! My original reason for asking is that I once had someone approach me (at a wedding) complaining bitterly about another photographer... after a little digging it turned out it was the other photographers picture choice for this persons album that was the cause not the actual pictures themselves
On a similar vein I once had a bride ask me "why are there so many pictures of that guy?" there were 2! Anyway the point is that he just happened to be one of those people that "draw the camera" he was interesting, simple as that... to the bride he was no one and had I chosen his image for the album for any reason she would have been very unhappy!
I feel beautiful photos mean nothing if the people in them don't carry the same meaning to the people who hired you in the first place... I like the idea of allowing a few favs to be chosen! I think it's also not a bad idea to have an "anti selection" in other words put what you like in but DON"T put that or those ones in!

I advise my clients to select X-number of "Must-Haves". We will fill in the rest. Have a draft completed where they can preview. They are allowed to make up to 2 change cycles. After that there will be a charge per change cycle.

How do you let your clients choose the photos? I am currently using SmugMug and I don't see any easy option to allow clients to mark a photo they like other than leaving a message on each individual photo.

Funny this thread should come back as we've just started designing our first albums. Our policy is that we choose and design on our own. We then send a digital proof to the clients. Once they sign off, we print. We allow them to make a couple of revisions and then the final decision on how the album looks is ours.

Hah. The storytelling is precisely why we design them ourselves. And yeah...we don't include any formals.

We used to wait for the bride and groom to choose the images for the wedding album. In some cases, we were waiting 6 months to a year for their choices and some of the images did not make a cohesive album.
Recently we changed to designing the album with our choices. We have the bride and groom make a few image changes if they would like. 50% have the album printed as is, 45% change less than 10 images and 5% change enough of it to make it a total disaster!
