p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 17-40 Vs 24-104 IS on a 1DMk2 ?

I am trying to adjust from a 20D to a 1DMk2, and need a good lens for landscapes and overall picture taking.

What would be your opinion on the 17-40 vs 24-105 with IS on the 1DMk2?

Going from the 20D is quite a change to begin with and the otions are boggling my mind to say the least.

I was going to pick up a magic Lantern guide, but from reading the reviews it would probably be a waste of time.

Any good sites for getting to know the 1DMk2 ?

i have and enjoy both of these lenses. they're really cut from the same cloth. with regard to which one you pick... i'd say it all comes down to how you shoot. would you rather have the wide or the reach? do you *need* the IS? the 17-40 is more compact and doesn't telescope when you zoom, which is nice, but doesn't have the reach or the IS.

in other words, what focal lengths do you live in?

if you don't know this off the top of your head, go into lightroom and pull up your metadata and see how many shots you take at different focal lengths. you might be surprised at what you find out about the way you shoot.

I had both plus the 1D2. I no longer have the 24-105L.
I sold it because i prefer to use the 35L + 80-200L with a 5D or 1D2. When i need wide, i use the 17-40L , its a great litle light lens.

The 24-105 is GREAT. Most loved lens ever sold and still miss it. Could not afford to have them all plus some others.

In a 1D2 the 24-105 is a killer. Very very good. Great all rounder, good reach, reasonably wide (not too wide but still good for group shots). I would say with only 1 lens the 24-105 is the winner. But what do YOU shoot ?

i agree about the 24-105 being great. and for me it's on the chopping block as well because of $$ constraints. nice and sharp, great contrast... i get some wonderful portraits out of this lens

but at the end of the day i might prefer to hang on to the 17-40 and work with primes in the 50-100mm range. but that's a story for another day...

I'd say it depends what lens you've been using on the 20D the most. I have both those lenses but I am using them on FF not 1.3 crop. With the 1.3 crop I'd tend to lean towards the 17-40 if you also have a longer lens like one of the 70-200s. If this is like your only lens then you have to trade wide for long. What other lenses do you have and what lenses have you been most using on the 20D?

Believe it or not I tend to use the kit lens 18-55, although I have the 10-22 as well.
I like to shoot land and seascapes. I rarely If ever shoot portraits at all. I do have the Canon 70-200 F4, but at the same time I yearn for a little more reach sometime when using my 18-55.
I try and shoot Birds in Flight, but with the 20D I don't always get shots in focus, Then again I have a 100-400, and thats what I use for BIF, but its also where I seem to have focus issues, which is one reason I picked up the 1DMk2, because I heard it focused much quicker than the 20D, although as of yet trying to set it up for BIF has been shall we say interesting. I think the way I have it set now is for center focus with the expanded 7 sensors around it.
I also shoot macro as well and was out saturday trying out flowers and such, at least the few that are out, and focus kept changing all the time, it was hard just to get a lock, but again I found out I had the camera set for not just center focus, so that may have been the issue, especailly with close to the ground vast areas of small blooms.
So I use a lot of different foccal lengths, but right now have really nothing for the 1DMk2 for landscapes.

I had the same quandary, and it was a hard one. Obviously, you can't go as wide on the 1.3 crop as you can either full frame, or 1.6 crop because you have to use full frame lenses. I shoot on the 1dII, and got the 24-105 right away for it. I found myself always wanting wider and longer. I'm more of a wildlife/landscape shooter (not people). So I sold the 24-105 and got the 17-40. It comes out to around a 21-50mm on the 1D. I find that I really like that focal length. For "people" shots, I use the 50mm focal length, and the 70-200 for portraits. It works for me.

If you find yourself using the kit 18-55mm lens on your 20D all the time, even over the 10-22, then the 24-105 is for you. The 18-55 equals 29-88 on 20D. The 24-105 is equally as wide on your new camera and also gives you more reach.
