interesting, it explains how D800 does video

which also explains why the D800 video is a little bit sharper than the 5D3 but also why it has much worse color moire and why the 5D3 video SNR seems so much better even though the stills SNR does not (the D800 reads all photosites in a line but only reads one out of every three lines, so for video it is not capturing FF light but a sensor only 1/3rd the size of FF so even a bit worse SNR ratio than even an APS-C sensor would have for the same technology while Canon appears to be reading the entire FF sensor for video)

I wonder what the crop mode on the D800 is like though? full 1920x1080 res with no aliasing/moire and same SNR?? or is it messed up in some way??

EDIT:
Oops only D4 and some lower end canon/nikon/panny have that.

They thought it wouldn't have good enough SNR with the small D800 photosites, but seeing how they skip 2/3rds of the sensor anyway would it really be much any worse? A shame they made that decision.

I just hope Canon will add it in under pressure form users....

so basically looks like (for video only NOT talking stills where the results are VERY different):

D800 has, very roughly, perhaps 2/3rds stop better DR at ISO 100 (again talking video here NOT stills), probably it is even by ISO320, worse at 800 and 1.5-2 stops worse ISO1250+

D800 has roughly 1.5-2 stops worse SNR across the board

D800 has more aliasing

D800 has a lot more color moire

D800 probably captures a bit more detail (neither it real detail winner though)

and also thus 5D3 has much better SNR for video than the 5D2 and with far less aliasing and color moire, for video, the 5D3 actually might be the 1.5-2 stops better SNR even if for stills it is not
