Oh, Nikon has been on a roll with the D800 allright:
1) Yet another vaporware product release. Sure, it is in high demand but exactly how many units have they put on the market so far? B&H and Adorama seem to have shipped a handful, Amazon maybe a bit more on account of lack of NPS program. BB has been by far the biggest seller, and everybody else has been at best in single digits, and a significant number of resellers are at an outright goose egg.
2) Planning has been wonderful. Let's release a product right before we close down the warehouse for inventory.
3) UK Marketing has exceeded all possible levels of ineptitutde.
4) Best of all, their own dealers are in the dark about what they will receive and when they will receive it, at least if you assume that the dealers are telling you the truth.
No, I am not whining because I do not have a D800 in my hands. I will wait and be just fine. However this does not mean that Nikon is not pi*sing over what should have been a moment of triumph, where they more or less dominate the competition across the entire dSLR lineup.

True on all counts, with a product like this they are unlikely to lose any sales though. It used to be Canon with paper product releases, tables seem to have turned.

Wasn't the 1Dx announced last October - try to find one in a store. I don't think one vendor is any better than the other.
