p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 5Dc + 50mm 2.5 Macro AF issue

I just bought a 5Dc off the B&S, and it arrived yesterday. While testing it out, I noticed that my 50mm 2.5 Macro will only auto focus when the camera is in "auto" mode (green square on the dial). I tried other modes at various f-stops, as well as switching between "One shot" and "AI Servo" AF modes, but the camera will not drive the focus at all (doesn't even make any noise or try to focus).

Is this a camera settings issue? Firmware issue? Maybe a lens compatability issue?

ETA: Sure enough, back button focus. Thanks everyone!

I've used this combo and never had any issues in any mode.

is it possible that the camera body is set to "back button focus"?

It could be. Especially since I don't know what that is This is really only a problem because I can't seem to shoot raw in "auto" mode on the 5Dc, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

If the camera body was set to "back button focus", this would be an issue with all of your autofocus lenses.

when the body is set to back button focus, you press the af-on ( or '*') button for autofocus in all but the full auto mode.

try it, you may like it.

Hmmm, I'll give this a shot tonight. I haven't had the chance to try the camera with any other lenses because I was short on time last night, but I'll try changing the settings with the 24-70 tonight and see.

I've been reading a bit about the back button focus feature, seems pretty cool. I don't know how I've never heard of it before...

my preferred setting is for back button focus, with half press to lock exposure.
I'm willing to bet this is the issue, and that your lens/body combo is fine.

If you've not tried any other lens then I would bet it is set to use the back * button. I don't think the 5D has an AF on button like the later bodies do.
When in green square mode this function is disabled which is likely why it works.

As to it being pretty cool, it is if you can get used to using it. For me as much as I try to I find I miss too many shots when I forget
