p.1 #1 · 5DIII and Older Third Party Lenses...

A few days ago someone reported on the macro forum that their older Sigma 150mm macro will not function at all with their newly acquired 5DIII. Considering the fact that I have a 5DIII on the way and the Sigma 150 is one of my most used lenses this is something that has me a bit worried. I'd absolutely hate to have to send my lens off to Sigma/CRISS to have it rechipped, so I was wondering if anyone else has had any issues with older third party lenses (specifically the Sig 150) and the 5DIII.

Yikes, that would suck. Better not be the case as I also have the 50/85 f/1.4 and 24 f/1.8 as well as the 150 macro.

Yea, I ran a search and came up with this as well, which might be an issue but who really knows at this point.

Yes, it would definitely be a bummer for sure but as I've said repeatedly for years now, I will not purchase another (Canon mount) 'Stigma' lens for this very reason. I just can not trust their Canon reverse engineering…years ago I lost a boat-load of their lenses when they refused to play nice when I went digital. By that time my old Sigma lenses did not qualify for any 're-chipping' or whatever SIgma was doing at the time to 'fix' the problem. End result was a bag full of paper weights…I won't do that again! Hopefully Sigma will be able to 'fix' your lenses…good luck.

Has anybody tried Tammy 28-75 on 5DIII?

I have had the same experience when I had a 10D. Sigma lens incompatable. Sigma would not rechip. Same conclusion. No more Sigma lenses.

Well that's positive news, do you have any idea how old your copy is?

Search in Used Dept.

I would be very surprised if not all sigma 150 lenses worked on the 5D3. The Sigma 150 is not an old lens.

The member who reported the apparent incompatibility issue on the macro forum has since tried the lens again, only this time he got full functionality, which is a huge relief.

In my case it would be "no more new Canon bodies".

Sorry, not a Canon shooter, but my Sigma 105 macro bought October 2008 won't work with my Nikon D7000. Grossly front focusing 180 macro has put me right off Sigma....

But then it must have been another Sigma lens that was a lot older than the 150 macro

I'm very pleased with the Sigma macro lenses. Today I only own the 50/2,8 and 150/2,8 macro. But before I also had the 105 and 180 macro's. And they have been working very good with all 8 Canon bodies that I own or have owned. I also have owned two copies of the Sigma 20/1,8 that have worked on all bodies

Just got the 5d3 yesterday and tried all my 3rd party lenses;

Sigma 70-200 HSM OS ex dg f/2.8
Sigma 50 f/1.4
Tokina 16-28

All are focussing perfectly with no issues, in fact the 70-200 seems even sharper thn before with the 5d2, could be my imagination as I am just giddy over the 5d3's AF system :-)

Good to hear these lenses actually working on 5D III.

I'm a sorely tempted by the new Sigma 180 f/2.8 macro OS, and will never stop buying third party lenses if they are good enough while offering good value.
