...just past midnight, clear skies, and a 1/2 moon waxing gibbous:

I love it, the moon supplied all the light? I am going to have to start staying up after dark.

Reminds me of my last trip to the Tetons. I was the first one at the Schwabacher parking area and was trying for some Milky Way shots against the dark outline of the Tetons. Still pitch black and no moon. Then everything lit up with headlights as people started arriving. In this case the light ruined the shot. In your case it looks really natural.

Yea I think so too, here's a different angle (closer) w/o the lantern and only 1/2 moon light at the same camera settings:

Great shot. I really like the detail on the trees against the starred sky. It looks surreal. Great mood.
Thanks for sharing,
Fred

Aha! It was nice meeting you... I was one of the two photographers that you met here.

Your shots look good. I like that POV you got from in the water. I haven't posted my shot from here yet, but mine's a bit wider pull back than yours.

BTW, the lantern was mine, not the rangers. We'd been using it for adding some ambient light to the falls.

Anyways, it was nice to meet you (albeit briefly) - maybe if I'm down in the area again, I might look you up.

Oh as for the rangers, they were actually State Police and after talking to them a bit, they were mostly concerned where we'd parked the car and hiked in (since we weren't officially patrons of the park). Alls well that ended well!

Isn't that something...I'm not surprised I got the lantern business wrong, I was in my element...I get it from the wife all the time...she hates when we are sight-seeing etc. and I step into my photog world. When you get a chance, post your shots, I'd like to see any you have of me setting up.

Sweet shots here, #2 is my favorite. That Samyang seems to perform pretty well huh? I was thinking on getting one.

Now where in Round Rock is this? I have family moving there, so I will end up visiting there. Can you maybe give me a list of a few photogenic landscape locations around Round Rock?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim, the location is marked in the Yahoo maps on the flickr photo...click the "Source" link under the photo.

There's not much in Round Rock for landscape, it's too heavily populated, although just 10 minutes north of where I live I snapped the below shot. Lot's a great State Parks west and SW of the area with good features. Albeit, lot's of the same old stuff...rock and stump juniper. You can travel for miles and not have any shift in geography; in fact, I'm scheming to move from this area to the PAC NW.

The above shot was taken with a converted Minolta Rokkor-X 45mm f/2 lens on a Canon 5D Mark II and even at f/8 it's not perfect infinity focus but close. I convert them: https://vimeo.com/14891384

Great night shots. Nice comp. in #2, the starry sky and the overall exposure really make the photo surreal.

I like them both...although the second seems rather flat. Maybe boost the contrast a tad.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Having driven through Texas a few times, it seems a whole lot of the same no matter where you go. But still, in the event I visit the relatives, it's good to have a few places in mind.

Thanks!

Jim

You just have to get more creative to get shots here in TX, that's all.

The first shot is really fantastic. Yes, soft moonlight can do wonders to many landscapes.
