D200 + 80-400 VR @ 400mm, ISO 800, 1/320, f8, 3x crop

This was taken yesterday at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area on Long Island, NY. A light mist was falling creating nice soft light and giving everything a soft and damp look.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Ps.

If you read my exif data it shows that I used flash yet there was none as my SB800 had failed. Even disconnected from the camera it does not fire. The under exposure code comes up with no flash.

I can get it fixed for $131 by precisioncamera.com
KEH has them used for between $360 and $400 depending on condition
B&H has them for $220 to $250 and they sound about as beat up as mine

My other option is an SB910 $475 used like new; or new SB800 for $550.

I’m guessing the reason my SB800 has failed was firing too many times in a row as it’s not protected and I use a battery pack. The SB910 has protection for this.

Does anyone have experience with flash repair and is it worth it?
How long should a new flash last?

get it fixed, and replace it when you upgrade the other gear. Though it is a 'band-aid' strategy, replacing the flash is too. How many actuations do you have on that D200? Probably 300,000.....

You must have this turned around. I would go with the 900 or 910. I never like the SB800

Nice Morris, as for the flash my 580EX II is going on 4years strong, fixing it for 130.00 sounds like the way to go to me at least.

Thank you Joe,

I’ve approaching 50,000 actuations on this 3 year old Nikon factory refurbished D200. The shutter is rated for 150,000 so I can expect about 6 years more out of this delightful camera. I purchased the refurbished D200 rather than a new D300 as we had hit some tough financial times when my D70s failed. I prefer to replace equipment when it fails and get things that meet my needs. The SB800 is 7 years old and has treated me well.

Your camera is so used to that flash firing, it just assumed it did.
