Hi all,
I was in Barnes and Noble this evening and I started picking up some books, and couldn't decide which book to get. Then it occurred to me that I should ask everyone's opinion. I have a relatively solid foundation of knowledge and am looking for a more advanced book (either photography in general or specific to portraits) to help me improve my shooting. I would love any and all advice.Thank you in advance!

Just checked that book out on Amazon and found a used copy for $3.60 with shipping. Figured I spend more on a beer at the bar than that. Does anyone have any experience with either of these books?

The one book I wouldn't be without is this one from Scott Kelby. Work your way through it and learn loads!

Light it
Shoot it
Retouch it

Another vote for Scott Kelby's books.

He just came out with a fourth book in his Digital Photography series. I purchased the first three as a set and now the fourth. They are medium format paper backs, reasonable price and have great step-by-step processes. If you like Scott's sometimes dry sense of humor you can't go wrong with any of his.

It's hard to recommend Kelby when he puts Photoshop Disasters on the covers of his books and tries to pass himself off as a Photoshop guru:

http://www.psdisasters.com/2010/06/digital-photography-book-reflections.html

Martin Evening is much better for Photoshop. He has a book out for every edition of Photoshop and they are specifically designed for photographers' interests and needs.

For general photography there is Langford's textbook, now in 7th edition. The basic one covers a lot of stuff, and there is also an Advanced one.

For lighting, there is "Light, Science, and Magic".

For portraiture, see Karsh, Don Peterson, some Amherst Media books, Monte Zucker, Arnold Newman and many others.

To free your mind creatively, see the books by Freeman Patterson, the last four on this page: http://www.freemanpatterson.com/books.htm

Kelbys books are among the most helpful out there. I never read anything that would lead me to think he considers himself a guru. He simply tells you the easiest way in his opinion and experience to accomplish a task and he does it very well.

Another vote for Scott Kelby. Both his book and Understanding Exposure are very helpful and to the point. I have other books, but these two stand out. For whatever reason, Freeman's book, The Photographers Eye, was a waste of money for me. That book and I do not get along. I actually threw it in the trash. Apparently my cleaning girl thought it was a mistake as the book resurfaced yesterday. It is now a running joke around the house. I am happy to donate it to anyone who wants to come pick it up. Seems to be bad karma to toss it in the trash.

Cheers, Steve

Never read Kelby's book, but in the link to the disaster at least he takes responsibility.

Understanding exposure is great.

I have People Pictures right beside me and am currently on exercise #6 (journal and all). I find it to be an excellent book. It slows you down and simplifies things. Check it out.
